Government redefining the term "beta" 08:15 - Sep 16 with 1023 views | DanTheMan | I enjoyed discovering this morning that the term "beta" had changed in relation to the software development life cycle. "But the government now says "beta" is a standard labelling practice for a digital service that is fully operational, and that it has reassured industry that Smart Freight will be operational by December" https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54172222 This is just outright false. If they'd have left out the term "fully" you could have almost got away with it. But they just had to lay it on thick. For those unaware, a system in "beta" is usually (but not always) functionally complete but has not been thoroughly bug tested or user tested. The standard practice for something like this might involve giving the logistics industry limited access months before it has to be used in anger so they can spot bugs or just general issues with it. I imagine what is going on here is they are saying it's fully functional now and hoping nothing goes wrong in the "beta" which isn't a beta. Then if anything does go wrong they can say "oh it was just in beta, these things were expected".

Government redefining the term "beta" on 08:43 - Sep 16 with 940 views | thebooks | The testing site is in Alpha, amusingly enough https://self-referral.test-for-coronavirus.service.gov.uk/antigen/name Tories get excited by meaningless guff like move fast and break things without understanding how things really work. So it goes. A good rule of thumb is to never run beta software unless you're happy to provide free testing for the software developer.

Ha, I hadn't spotted that. No wonder it's working so well.

It's not a comedy account, it'll be a previously banned treasure who's come back for more. At some point in the next few weeks he'll break cover and start sending someone wedding photos via PM.

Government redefining the term "beta" on 14:21 - Sep 16 with 673 views | longtimefan | As someone in the software business I agree whole heartedly with your definition. It does seem as though the Government websites use the term somewhat differently. If you look at the UK Passport renewal site that is shown as in Beta. But that site has been fully operational and running now for at least 2 years as I renewed in 2018.

Green is a horrible colour, especially mixed with yellow.
