Marginal gains and percentage football 22:19 - Dec 15 with 801 views | Darth_Koont | I like the players and the way they worked for each other. But we look a much better side when we raise the tempo, go direct and pick up the pieces. Which is as much a criticism of Lambert and the slow and ponderous approach we have to playing the ball out from the back. It just makes the whole team look uncomfortable. Let the players hit the ball early and they can play on instinct. And we also see how you can force League One opposition into mistakes.

Marginal gains and percentage football on 22:23 - Dec 15 with 740 views | FrimleyBlue | Thing is. If our squad were that comfortable being on the ball for long periods of time. They wouldn't be playing this level. To be able the pop the ball about and be direct relaxes everyone. You can try more things. Work hard If it doesn't come off but if you make a mistake it's usually in the final third. With us. If we make a mistake it comes back to haunt us very quickly. So players play with fear.

Exactly this; gives oppo time to regroup and settle as we faff around to no effect. How Lambert can’t see this will baffle me for the rest of my life

Marginal gains and percentage football on 22:27 - Dec 15 with 675 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Marginal gains is ironic. It was originally about getting every detail right from the mattresses the athletes sleep and diet to the minutest detail in setting up their bikes. Ultimately the little details give the extra 1% that makes all the difference between a winning time and an also ran. Isn't it also the philosophy Lambert applied at nodge with painting the away dressing room black and all that nonsense? We can't even get the basic general fitness and stamina levels for half our squad to stay fit for more than half of a season. I am quite sure that if we applied marginal gains to everything fitness related our injury record would not be what it is.

Stick Jackson off Hawkins in a 4-4-2 and stop trying to be so cute about it. Let the defenders defend, be a little more direct and get bodies supporting the front 2. We ask for trouble week in week out by playing so much ball in our third.

Yeah I was being a bit sarcastic with “Marginal gains”. I forgot to make that point after I’d written the title 😀 Marginal gains is assuming we’re a well-drilled side looking for perfection but in reality we should be doing the League One variant which is playing the percentages. We’re just not clinical enough in our build-up play that we can control the ball and work 5 great chances a game and come out on top. We need to get players and the ball into the attacking third and see what happens.

I'm sorry but I don't believe your first paragraph to be true. There are plenty of teams that play possession football at all levels of the game where players have reached their maximum level. Crew spring to mind in division 3 we were out classed by them as as team, but we ground out a win due to us having better players.
