The Brexiteers were right, we did hold all the cards and it was perfectly possible to leave all of the institutions of the EU and have things carry on as normal.

Is that 40% down from December or 40% down from last January?

I would expect exports to be massively down every January after the Christmas shipping rush, also it is fact that everyone was mass shipping goods before January in order to beat the red tape. Export comparison from last January will also be largely effected due to Covid.

So I wouldn't read a great deal into those figures.

However - I am sure that short to medium term there will be a genuine drop in imports and exports to and from the EU. We don't export but we do (did) ship to NI and NI may as well be in Greece at the moment. We have one large customer who only buys once or twice a year and we will have to find a way for them but for smaller and B2C customers at this time we aren't even going to bother as it's too much hassle, we will just say we can't ship. Of course if it were a significant part of the business we would make an effort but it isn't so we wont.

We do though import from Italy and Germany and we will see how that goes. As an importer we don't have the problems that the exporter is facing but we are due a shipment imminently and will see how that goes.

Ultimately I think that if it's worth it companies will make the effort to do the paperwork but if it's small business then they won't bother. As I say it's not a big thing for us and the big players can handle it easy but the small cottage industries will suffer for a while.

To be honest I haven't noticed any difference since we left. Life seems to be carrying on as before.

Delighted to hear your haulage business / import - export business / fruit and veg picking business / retail business is performing so well.

Well that's a relief. Seems like it's all going swimmingly in that case.

Also the French wine industry, I have noticed a vast reduction in the number of wines from the France section of supermarkets, particularly in the £10 - £20 price range. I have diverted my attention to South America and found some really good Chilean and Argentinian red wine.

I must have missed this. Glad we left the EU now.

It's a drop from December

Well if I have read the graphs correctly our trade with the EU January 2020 was:

Imports £19.4bn
Exports £13.6bn

So the January 2021 figures compared represent a drop of about £4bn in each case.

Usual caveat that I may have that completely wrong.
