Disclaimer... It would be nice if we could avoid descending into any squabbles on here, but I was reading an article in the NYT this morning regarding NYC's vaccination campaign and attempts to reach members of the public who have not taken up the offer of vaccination yet - and their reason why.

I personally don't know anyone who has not been vaccinated when eligible, and personally find some of the reasons I've heard for not being vaccinated utterly bizarre. Does anyone here know anyone hesitant, or who is outright refusing, to be vaccinated? Have you spoken to them about why? I'm just curious as to what the main concerns are out there (and whether they are different in the UK to over here).

I'll whack the article link at the bottom (it's paywalled but I think you can get round that in incognito) but here are some choice quotations:

“We didn’t leave this apartment for two and a half months,” Ms. Paulino, 30, explained, saying her family had been extra-cautious. Still, she explained, they were unlikely to get vaccinated. It was up to God whether or not she got Covid-19, she said, and whether or not she died.

“My mom said, ‘They’re putting something in the vaccine to kill people,’” Mr. Ramos recalled.

“People don’t want Moderna because they say you’re going to need a booster shot,” said Manny Diaz, an unvaccinated hotel worker, who lives in the North Bronx. He said he was willing to get the Pfizer vaccine – whose plan for a booster shot seems to have received less attention – but didn’t know where to get it.

Qn for you Spruce - one thing that continues to wind me up - we have test, trace and isolate and everyone knows the isolate is the weak link - majority of people just don't or can't do it.

I read that NYC did quite a bit on it when it was needed - you got any insights?

To be perfectly honest, beyond being asked for one member of your party to leave an address or phone number when you went to a bar or restaurant, the whole track, trace and isolate went pretty unnoticed by me. This could be down to the fact that we were both fortunate to be able to work from home and didn't often go out to eat or drink (but when we did it was to one or two of our local spots. We also could control who we had in our house (pretty much nobody). We never once received a text to say we had been in a location with someone who had since tested positive though.

There was also setting on my phone I could switch on which would alert me if I'd been anywhere with anyone who had since tested positive, but again, I never received a notification. It seemed that all these systems relied on the person who had tested positive informing the people and places they'd been around that they had tested positive.

The isolation part, well, I know the city were at once point offering up free hotel rooms for people to quarantine in, or for people in multi-person households who had tested. positive. But in a city of 8 million+ that's only going to go so far, especially when so many people live in multi-generation homes, or with room mates.

I work with a few younger colleagues who have flat mates. I've heard some horror stories from some about how their flatmates have acted this last year - bringing randoms back to the house, inviting people over for parties, not isolating after trips, even putting their fecking room on Airbnb while heading back to wherever their family was to see the pandemic out.

I don't proclaim to know huge amounts about either the virus or the vaccine, but isn't it the case that the vaccine neither prevents you getting the virus, nor does it stop transmission of the virus.

It won't give you 100% protection from catching it. But your chances of getting very seriously ill, or dying are significantly reduced.

And the rate of spread (passing it on to others) is now confirmed as significantly lower too.

So it really is a sensible thing both for your health and those around you.

You made a wise and sensible choice imho.

Someone far cleverer than me will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure, but I believe it vastly reduces your likelihood of catching it (and if you don't catch it you can't pass it on), and it vastly reduces the severity of your symptoms.

So if a worker is on minimum / low wages, and told to self isolate - was there any financial help available for lost wages to those who isolated?

Depended on the employer.

If you were a bar tender (living on tips and salaried way below minimum wage) it was probably tough tits. There was more support (barely) if your employer furloughed you. But even then, the processing time was slow. There was that first miserly stimulus check, but then Trump stopped pretending to care.

Don't know anyone personally who has refused the vaccine, but was in discussion with a client today who told me his sister in law won't have the second jab as she has a terrible fear of needles.
By all accounts, her first dose was completely painless and she had no side effects at all.
Now i can understand her fear of needles as i have the same phobia, although not as acutely it would seem. Had my second one on Saturday and it all went well, not even a sore arm the following day, so i have offered to have a chat about it with her if she is up for it.
My client, by the way, had a bad time after his first dose, but had his second last week without any issues.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

The thing is, these weren't grizzly old hillbillies. They were young, just out of collage age types. Seemed like they felt like it was no big deal to catch Covid, if they got it they got it and would get better.

So, in short, not Trump voters, but they did share the qualities of ignorance and selfishness with them!

Putting aside the stuff covered by Steve's comments, cos there's not much to argue with there, I do know a couple of out-right deniers.

And I mean full-on think the virus is a hoax, world-wide conspiracy and all the incredible nonsense that goes with it.

What an insult to those who have suffered and are still suffering.

When these people see the images on their TVs, India right now for one clear and obvious example, what is it they think they are looking at?

I really have no idea. At what point does it become some kind of mental health crisis to live in a fashion that contradicts reality so clearly? Even the slightest examination of the situation utterly destroys the idea that it's a hoax.

Yet even on here I've had a long standing poster PM me, mouthing off that it's all a 'Plan-demic'.

"Plandemic."

These types are always so pleased with themselves for their 'independent' thought whilst spouting these terms that are borrowed from other people.

It's the same rehearsed lines and you could be speaking to any one of them whilst they recite them.

As if J2 would ever take the time to PM me! I'm sure you could guess who it was pretty quickly. Always angry, hates Chambo and Skuse. I've got him on ignore now to prevent more unsolicited and hateful PMs.

If everybody has 80 to 90+ percent protection, there is, at most, a one-fifth chance of the virus being able to pass on to a new host. And a one-fifth chance of passing on beyond that to someone else.

By the third transmission, the chance of that viral lineage still going is one fifth of one fifth of one fifth. 125/1 is not good odds. Couple more stages and the virus is 3,125/1 against survival.

Through an extensive, concerted vaccination programme between the 1950s and 1977 (the date of the last known naturally occurring case), Smallpox was completely eradicated, over the entire planet. A disease which had killed around 300 million in the 20th century alone and disfigured many more.

I wonder if Facebook had been around between the 50s and 70s it might have helped extend the eradication timeline somewhat!?
