'Person who has given birth' instead of 'mother' on 20:51 - Jun 4 by DanTheMan | Is that the story you meant to link? EDIT: Wait, are you genuinely annoyed they refer to "Pregnant people" in the article? [Post edited 4 Jun 2021 20:56]

He's got a point though. Speaking as a non-pregnant person I feel a bit left out. It's not right when you think about it. I'm not even allergic to wheat ffs, or whatever it is that happens to pregnant people. Dairy is it? There must be someone I can write to. [Post edited 4 Jun 2021 21:22]

I'll get right on it and let you know how that turns out. It's scientific research which means it's fine.

'Person who has given birth' instead of 'mother' on 20:26 - Jun 4 by BlueandTruesince82 | We've just had this at work. We now have child bearing parent and non child bearing parent. I don't see why you can't just have parent 1 and parent 2 please ask for more paper if you need additional parents |
Which again causes problems in the case of adoption. And especially in the case of adoption by a trans woman with a male partner who has subsequently adopted, and who doesn't want to draw attention to the fact that her child is adopted and that she was unable to bear the baby. She may want that to he confidential. And yet, if employers or schools follow Stonewall's suggestions, any School Secretary could ask questions requiring the parent to lie or to reveal confidential information. "Mother" can be used by a biologically-born woman, a Trans-woman, a birth mother or an adoptive mother. And the school secretary doesn't need to know which applies. I don't get it. For the record, I have been the individual who five different people have come out as gay to first, after their family, and I have supported them. I've been approached by a Trans-woman and have helped her to find a way to begin identifying as female for the first time in Public. I am completely supportive of gay rights and have made substantial changes to my life to leave an organisation that wasn't doing enough to move forward in supporting gay people. The child of a very close long term friend has come out as transgender in the past two months, and we have been trusted with that information and are supporting that family. But I genuinely believe that this hasn't been thought through. Adoptive families are also vulnerable and deserving of dignity. Calling a woman who was formerly legally defined as a man prior to transition "Mother" accords her equal status as a woman who has always been defined as such, whether she biologically bore her child or adopted him or her or them. This kind of story just creates anger and hostility towards trans people, and if Stonewall's suggestions were acted.upon would cause pain and risk breaching confidentiality for adoptive parents and children. It's possible to be pro-gay and trans rights, and still be able to ask questions about unintended consequences of interventions like this.
