The finances of Speedway 12:25 - Jun 24 with 3311 views | Illinoisblue | Always amazes me that year after year the sport of speedway carries on. Surely can’t be a lot of money in the sport. Guessing TV doesn’t put in much. Are the riders pretty much relying on individual sponsorship to get them through the season? And what is an average crowd for the Witches?

The finances of Speedway on 12:50 - Jun 24 with 3232 views | UB9Blue | I have followed speedway for years and I have never go my head around the workings of its finance. British Speedway signed up with Eurosports from this season for the coming three (?) years which would have helped but I dont know how this money flows down the league structure. The Witches have some decent main sponsors including TruPlant who also sponsor Kings Lynn and Sheffield (50% of the Premier League teams) Attendances are probably around the 2k mark although this increases for play offs or the bank holiday meeting, particularly if the sun is out. Many speedway teams have struggled in recent seasons with Wolverhampton putting their season on hold until more supporters are allowed in, Poole dropping down to the Championship and Somerset closing down completely. I imagine that it is a bit of a thankless task balancing the books as its a sport that is not massively supported in the UK compared as it is in Poland and Denmark

I saw on twitter the witches were playing at Sheffield tonight and it got me thinking of just the logistics/costs involved of getting riders, bikes and equipment up there.

The riders are responsible for their equipment and transportation, all those costs come out of their wages from the club and their individual sponsors. They earn their wages based on the number of points they score in a meeting. In regards to crowds, I’m think Foxhall is limited to 2000 people at the moment, and speedway haven’t sold out of any of the fixtures, so an average crowd of 2000 feels significantly over-stated.

Some riders will have appearance money on top of the points money they earn. Unfortunately this year due to travel restrictions and indeed in previous years the sport has suffered from a desperate lack of riders. As you can imagine an engine alone can cost around 5k that's without the bike, kevlars, helmet and safety gear etc, therefore many just cannot afford it without lucrative sponsorship deals. In Denmark they have a government funded programme for young riders and in Poland its basically the national sport.

I did not know that. Assume most riders have side gigs to help out with their costs.

there doesn't seem to be a full time living to be made out of speedway, but if only 2k want to attend a meeting, that's probably fair enough.

I think they basically spend most of their lives in a van going from meeting to meeting, guesting for teams, rising for lower league teams both here and abroad if they can although that has been made more difficult lately. I've not been for a while but there is something about the smell of exhausts, fried onions at an evening meeting

Been to every fixture this season. Sure I heard at one they turned people away, but crowds are around the 1500-1800 mark I think. £19 a pop (for adults) Really enjoyed it, but Ipswich have thrown away a couple of good positions.
