Probably down, but really that is to be expected. However, it will be interesting to see how much the wage budget has shifted with a lot of our players who were on championship contracts, albeit adjusted after relegation, are now moving on.

I would have thought we are still a little in pocket ?

How can we be down when Andre went for £1m?

Harper - £400k (ish)
Keeper - £200k (ish)
Burns - £200k (ish)

We also got small fees (maybe £50k each) for two others.

So slightly up, plus wages will be a LOT lower now, so its looking good all round.

The length of contracts also needs to be considered. The various fees will be amortised over the length of each contract. We also don't know about any deals being paid up - seen a couple of thoughts from Phil on here that that might be the case.

It'll all come out in the wash eventually. As long as we're broadly sustainable and have no cashflow issues it's not something we need to worry about too much.

At a guess;
Burns - £150k.
Harper - £250k (EADT reporting a lot lower figure than the original £500k quoted).
Hladky - £200k (I will be amazed if he didn’t have a relatively low release clause in his Salford deal).

Our transfer dealings have been great , whoever is behind the scouting and the negotiations is doing a great job .

With the £1m sale of Dozzell funding most , if not all , that's great business .

A commanding centre half ( maybe as skipper ) and another goalscorer next please !

'broadly sustainable and have no cashflow issues'

The last time I checked Ipswich Town were a football club within the pyramid of the English leagues...

So when you say loan fee I'm assuming that would be calculated as a transfer fee under EFL financial rules and therefore in terms of the original post there is a good chance we'll be in a loss for transfer fees as we'll need to add in £500k-£1m* for Bonne's loan fee, is that correct?

*based on he'll be on a minimum £10k a week Championship wage

Clubs that take players on loan will only pay a % of their wages - often quite a small one. Wasn't Bennetts on £15k+ - I'd be surprised if we paid much more than 10-20% of that...

Is this conjecture or do you have something to base this on?

It is no lie that whilst we bemoan Evans' spending when he did - he overpaid. He clearly paid high on contracts to get them over the line with managers, so what is to say he didn't with the player renewals too?

Ashton has seemingly approached deals with a broader financial picture in his head, so presumably will be much more shrewd as he's more experienced with the psychology of footie agents.

If the basis of your reply is 'we have better players, so we must have paid more' - I think you may well end up being quite surprised.

Well, we were offering Sonny Bradley 13k a week I believe it was reported. Do you think players like Harper will drop from Prem/Champ wage?

We will be paying decent money and will be. Especially if we're to sign players like Crooks. They're not going to come cheap.

Fair point. Apparently Harper was on £8k a week at WBA (source: https://salarysport.com/) - obviously this may not be 100% accurate.
In comparison Judge was allegedly on £6.5k, Huws £6.3k and Sears £5.3k. Even Ward was on £3.6k apparently.
I appreciate that these figures can't be proven to be 100% accurate, but even so it shows that even just maintaining last season's wage budget, we have freed up huge chunks of money that could be used to pay higher wages to fewer (but better quality/potential) players...

Probably because I doubt the £1m has been paid in one lump sum. I wouldn't be surprised if we got close to 50-60% upfront, with the rest coming in over the course of the season.

We also have to factor in agent fees on top of everything else - buying those 3 players with contracts still in play could well have amounted to a fair whack in what we have to give to the agents.

It's not that I don't think we were offering Harper a decent wage, but I don't for a second believe we were offering 13k a week to Sonny Bradley. 13k a week at the Championship level is a fair whack - I just can't see any team being so generous with a single wage at this level.

Even Crooks would be closer to 10k offered than 13k in my opinion. 10k is a sh*tload of money per week at L1

Burns - only £250k - great bit of business, looks like a proper number 7

Wll yes, there is that! I meant not loading up external debt that could bite our arse (e.g. Derby) and having enough clout to be able to guarantee wages, etc.

By the same token I don't expect we've paid lump sums either. Swings and roundabouts and everything......

Quite possibly, but I think it is tight or slightly down if we keep the agent fees in mind. Either way, I feel the business has been shrewd and considered, unlike when Marcus did actually throw some money in. I have a feeling we'll be making a profit on most of the players we bring in too.
