A small point from last night that impressed me about both Southgate and the 08:13 - Jul 8 with 3051 viewshomer_123

team.

Taking Grealish off - smart and brave move to sub a sub but moreover, nothing from Grealish at all, knew it was for the team, no throwing toys out etc etc.

Liked it a lot.

Ade Akinbiyi couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo...

I hated it. Denmark on the ropes and Grealish playing no small part in making their defence less than comfortable. Instantly the Danes were back in the game. Reminded me of Ramsey taking off Bobby Charlton in Mexico v West Germany

Wasn't substituting Charlton pre-planned before the game? I always understood that Ramsay told him to run his socks off in the first half in unbearable heat and so he was knackered when he came off?

As for last night, I said the same as you at the time. I thought Southgate had made a mistake, but it worked, so what do I know!

You're spot on. Southgate should have went for the kill in the second half of extra-time. Denmark were done. Instead he went defensive and allowed Denmark back into the game. It did the job but had one of the Denmark corners resulted in a goal, Southgate would have been hammered by the press.

Not really spot on, we haven't conceded a goal in open play and saw the game out comfortably. I'm sure Southgate would've received more stick had we kept bombing forward and got caught on the break.

I doubt that a 32 years old Bobby Charlton would have been told to "run his socks off" in the heat of Mexico. Subbing him for an athletic 24 years old Colin Bell with 20 minutes to go might now be seen as a smart move, but tactical substitutions were in the infancy in those days.
I saw the point of Trippier coming on for Grealish, but thought it was a negative sub which could have back-fired. A 5' 8" Trippier wasn't necessarily the man to withstand a potential aerial bombardment & Grealish is the sort of player who will keep the ball & draw fouls when you're trying to run down the clock. Still, all's well that ends well.

Re Southgate in general - he's certainly not the best manager in the world but for me he's a great fit for England. He's built a good relationship with the fans & media which in turn has allowed the players to feel more 'open' with the media which has certainly helped my perception on the current England squad.
