Global Britain - part 562 18:50 - Jul 13 with 804 viewsSteve_M

Despite a sizeable Tory rebellion the UK has decided to make savings from the world's poor in the face of a global pandemic. A larger rebellion headed off by promises of ministerial jobs from Johnson which, astonishingly, MPs believed.

Andrew Mitchell can explain better than I can why this is a bad thing:

But, also, things like international aid boost the country's prestige and image internationally, far more so than a (non-)royal yacht.

Disgraceful.

The most corrupt British Government in history still hating dirty foreigners and the poor.

Priti Patel has actually made it illegal to save the lives of drowning foreigners hasn't she?

And, on a more pragmatic level for the more '52' of you out there, helping to make other peoples' countries nicer helps to make them less likely to want to leave them.

Plus, you know, it's basic f**king decency to look out for those less fortunate than yourself.

Less likely to want to leave them, and less likely to develop and spread deadly diseases.

But do you think the majority of the 52% care?

All they care is that their taxes get cut.

Do they care if the party cutting them then squanders what they do raise as handouts to their rich mates either? Not as long their tax bill stays low.

Not explicitly, but it amounts to the same thing. She’s made it illegal to aid the arrival of an asylum seeker. So yeah, if anyone saves asylum seeker(s) from drowning off our coast and beings then to safety they could be prosecuted. Maximum penalty is life.

It’s beyond disgusting. Will please the Farage types though.

I’m sorry, but is that last paragraph actually true?

I'm particularly enjoying the "we should look after our own first" lectures from the very same MPs that voted against providing free school meals in the holidays and will inevitably choose not to extend the Universal Credit uplift next month.

Yep. Aiding the arrival is the offence, so technically saving someone would be aiding their arrival. You’d like to think a case wouldn’t get off the ground, but that’s beside the point.

Edit - applies to asylum seekers, who be definition will be foreigners.

Edit edit - and only applies to unofficial channels of entry. Basically it’s aimed at smugglers/traffickers, but is cack handed to say the least.

They only have to resort to balancing the books in this way because they're too scared to tax the people who might be voting for them (or who might be donating to their political party/decorating/whatever).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
