“Irreversible”… - Boris Johnson

Even the most staunch Boris supporters can see it coming.

He’s called it wrong again and they are putting in the groundwork now to appear like they said “we know”

When they first said "cautious but irreversible", surely we all collectively rolled our eyes? Nobody believed them, did they? They can't have believed the line themselves, can they?

It was just so glaringly obvious that their actions would be neither cautious, nor irreversible. I honestly think we'd get clearer and more consistent messaging if the cast of The Thick of It were running the show.

I'm sick of hearing the soundbite "If we don't open up now when will we be able to open up?". Surely the answer to that question is when it's safe to do so, not lets just to it because it's possible. It's not like we're currently under heavy restrictions anyway!

Precisely. Life is fundamentally normal right now. You need to wear a mask in enclosed public settings, night clubs aren't open, and numbers are restricted at certain events. It's not that difficult to get on with. I used to go out to gigs and nights out most weekends before the pandemic, so I miss that a lot, but it really isn't that much of a price to pay for keeping things at bay for the time being.

I for one am shocked by this. Really expected the decision to be final this time.

Standard sarcasm disclaimer.

It still grates every time I hear the term 'lockdown'.

What effing lockdown?

Even during the first one, which was as close as we were going to get to actually having one, I was still able to pop to the Co-op and grab a bottle of red wine while I was there.

I’m generally up for getting the show on the road again, but I do think it’s another abdication of responsibility that we are lifting the final restrictions at a point when infections are rising at the rate they are.

It seems crazy.

Perhaps the schools breaking up will offset this though, that’s got to be a blow for the virus.

you can get the "show on the road" in a more sensible way, eg keep masks until the figures actually start falling/vaccinate under 18s etc.

schools closing will make a big difference, but the mixing from holidays is potentially negative

It’s pathetic and even more so to see ministers continually trotting out the party line when even they can’t believe it.

Especially when you’ve got almost every adviser saying it is a mistake and Chris Whitty warning of more restrictions back on 5 weeks.

Oh and 1,200 scientists saying it is dangerous

Have just been reading about Chris Whitty's warning and checked out Twitter where he is now being accused of lacking a backbone. This government has managed to make him the bad guy for a lot of people, as if he and the other scientists haven't been advising them of all of these things in private for months.
