Janoi Donacien 08:11 - Aug 18 with 2671 views | Keaneish | Worst fears confirmed last night (as if they were in any doubt). I’d argue that’s going to be one of Donacien’s easier games this season and he looked pedestrian and very uncomfortable last night. Time and time again he looked for the comfy pass, which slowed the play or spurned possession. I thought his positioning going forward was about 10 - 15 yards behind the play every time and he needlessly shanked it out when not under pressure or gave away plenty of avoidable throw-ins to play to their strength. Afraid to say but it’s very evident, his season is going to be extremely limited now and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an RB come in on loan.

Every time we went forward down the right (and to be quite honest pretty often down the left) the ball just came back to where it came from and everything slowed down. The main problem last night was Cook. Saying that, Bonne puts that chance away (how did he miss?) and we go on to win that game very comfortably. Cook didn't react at all to Cheltenham coming back into the game and was punished for it. |
I'm not sure that is entirely the case. Donacien attempted a few balls into the box, though often we didn't have many bodies in there, and he even went past his man a couple of times. It's not his strength but he got high enough up the pitch to create space for our more talented attacking options. He's not a world beater but he was a solid 6 out of 10 last night and certainly not our worst performer. Once Burns is fit I suspect Donacien will be third choice right back anyway so it's not a huge issue, I do find it odd how much he gets singled out though.

I wouldn't disagree. I think his area of the pitch was the weak link, rather him specifically. I don't think he did anything wrong in particular, but it wasn't working and that where Cook should have made a change early IMO.

I think in large part that's because he had the rather ineffectual Fraser ahead of him, whilst on the other flank we had Edwards.

Janoi Donacien on 09:20 - Aug 18 by Herbivore | I thought Penney was the weak link defensively. He's a good footballer but very lightweight and doesn't win aerial battles. He ended up in no man's land for their equaliser, half covering Burgess' man when he didn't really need to, and leaving the goalscorer more or less unmarked for a simple headed finish. He's been at fault for a decent proportion of our goals so far. |
Agreed and said similar about his performance against Morecambe, hasn't been great defensively and his passing and crossing have generally been poor. Hoping for a major upgrade when Coulsen steps in. Seems odd to single out Donacien when Penney appears the weaker of the current fullbacks. Donacien was also fine, as cover admittedly, against Burton. Think he's a handy squad player.

I'm not convinced that the "play out through the full backs" plan has consistently worked at any point this season. Even with Vincent-Young at RB more often than not the ball is going out there, then the full back finds themselves marked, so moves it back to the CB.

I think anyone tainted by association with the old regime is receiving more than their fair share of criticism at the moment (which isn't to say that all criticism of them is invalid, to be clear).
