How loyal would you be to the club? 23:25 - Sep 5 with 4897 viewsBluedicea

Just a thought exercise as I'm a curious person, to get a feeling for folks.

You're an ITFC fan, who has played for the club since a youngster, approaching 26/27 years old, one of the big 6 clubs offer you a massive contract on the back of this years promotion success, where does your career go as a fictional player, based on the reality of yourself as a person.
Do you take the money? Do you stay at ITFC to become the club legend? Does passing up the opportunity end up unsettling you and you flop here? Does accepting the offer cause you to lose the passion that gave you that extra edge? Do you go on to become a star for them? Or do you stick out the years to lift the PL and CL trophy for Ipswich?

Loyalty is key for me, I'd stay with project Ipswich and try to get them up. The offer would unsettle me for a season or two, especially as we struggle with some dodgy results. Eventually though, I'd remember my blood runs blue and kick on driving the team forward, and hopefully become a legend because of my solid but not always pretty defensive record, a workhorse for the team without any flashy bells and whistles. After finally lifting the PL trophy, we miss out on the CL trophy because of my defensive error(legs going), age taking the toll on my body and letting snails speed past me, I retire at the end of that season at 34. Happy that I stayed Blue to the core.

What is the use of knowing about everything else, when you do not yet know who you are.

The only reason to leave is if the club wants to sell. You would earn more money than you would ever need and would hope to be spoken about as fondly as our legends. To be held in such esteemed company would surely be any Ipswich fans dream.

If you’re at the club you love and getting paid well enough, what more do you need? It’s sad that it’s perceived as idealism when it used to be the pinnacle. The idea is to try and win titles and silverware with them, not jump ship to a possible rival because they can give you that. Football’s core is corrupt and hollow now. Personally i think the idea of being able to jump ship at will from one club to another because a billionaire with no relationship with the club who owns it as a vanity project is grotesque. Big players move between bitter rivals at will now and get enhanced benefits for doing so.

From the age of 7 all I ever wanted to do was play for Ipswich. If I’d achieved that, I wouldn’t give it up for any sum of money. Dreams shouldn’t be for sale or be bought in my view.

Hypothetically of course, it’s a couple seasons ago and you’re a young professional playing for Ipswich, the club you love. Lambert is still the manager and Evans the owner.

A club like Burnley, not the biggest PL club, come in for you with their manager stating in private that he really rates you and that you can play for England.

You look around the Ipswich dressing room and then Evans walks in. You just see mediocre players and awful management.

You’re telling me that you’re going to say no to potentially playing in the World Cup to stay at Ipswich?

I am with you 100% on that. If you are a professional footballer for a mid table Championship club, you will earn more money than you would ever need.

Money isn't some footballers only motivation. Some actually want to win stuff and play in the PL.

According to the Op, we are in the Premier League. This is all hypothetical of course, but the Op said you would be playing for Ipswich and just won the PL trophy. That is the stuff of dreams surely.

If I’m good enough to play for England then I’m good enough to play for England no matter who I play for or what salary I earn. Promises mean little.

We're only scratching the surface of this topic and to be honest most of us are fairly clueless about the real football world.

If you're 15 and Chelsea try and poach you from the academy on £10,000 a week and offer to buy your parents a house what do you do? Players frequently mention the sacrifices their parents made. Even if you aren't driven by money there must be immense pressure to get some sort of payoff for all your hard work. Especially in an industry where you are one injury or bad season way from being released and signing for a semi pro side.

Truly impaired.

You just got promoted this season end, to the championship. So there would still be work to make project Ipswich successful. So a PL team offering a contract would be extremely rare.

To me I would rather be an underdog and try to build something special, than I would to jump into a easier set up. I guess for me it's because I tend to perform better in adversity, than when things are running too easily. I get bored if I'm not challenged

That’s the thing - an average L2 player could well have a bad and injury hit season and then find himself on the transfer list looking forward to non-league football. Whereas, an average L2 player could well have one great season and be offered a four year deal in the championship on much much greater money.

it is, but you'd also be a different person, shaped by the culture and expectations of professional football. Footballers are how they are because that's how football makes them, not because they're all inherently disloyal people...

I would have stayed at my boyhood club regardless. The promise of money and trophies wouldn't have persuaded me. No right or wrong in this thread, just I know I would have stayed.

You are right, most of us have little knowledge or understanding about the off pitch side of football. I just think it's interesting to see how people respond.

Look at Chambers, love him or hate him, he will always be remembered at this club because of the length of time he played for us(No I'm not saying he's a legend), but how many will still regularly speak the same about Bialkowski, Waghorn, Knudson etc.
There are so many players that are just so forgettable because they don't establish themselves anywhere for long, a few do establish themselves at every club they play for but is much rarer.
Football was more competitive in years gone by, now most folks can predict who will win what and I feel a bit for players because now if you want a chance of a trophy or European football you either have to sell your soul for money or pass it up.
football was always the fans game, players were part of the community, they belonged to the fans so felt that sense of love and loyalty, modern footballers are much removed from that now.

What is the use of knowing about everything else, when you do not yet know who you are.
