where we are right now.... 08:40 - Nov 1 with 7235 viewsblueysbackside

....I might be wrong but it seems to me that there are fans just waiting for a bad result to pile on the pressure on Cook. And that whatever he does between now and whenever, he just can't win. I read of fans on here who gave him three games at the end of October, then two games at the end of November to save his skin. And prior to last Saturday it was all about the next five games being key etc etc. This short-term approach to trying to finding a winning lottery ticket just ain't gonna work. Other fans keep pointing to Wigan and whoever else as justification for why we should be doing better cos 'they also bought a load of players in the summer'. Yes, it doesn't always work like that at clubs. Were fans still wanting Cook to being in an assistant immediately after the 4-0 win at Pompey? I've said it once and I'll say it again. The season for me started post August when Celina and Morsy were in the team. Judge us - and Cook - after Xmas. We may not go up automatically, or via the play offs. It may well take time. Just cos we bought in a load of players doesn't mean we have a right to be up near the top - nor does it mean another manager will be able to do that with this squad. I see fans talking about 'yeah, but the owners wouldn't have brought in all these players if it wasn't the aim to go straight up this season'. Perhaps, but they won't be going anywhere soon. Be patient. Things are changing for the better.

We are not way off play offs. We could have beaten the top team in the league on Saturday. I think we were unlucky not to. We are what 7 points away from play offs a the beginning of November. With the desire in this team we will be there at the end of the season.

This team has no desire or stomach for a fight. If everything goes its way, it can do well, but too often it’s wilted when put under pressure. It diesn’t help that it’s being led by a man whose previous success appears to have built on the back of his former Number 2, a man who is comprehensively thriving without Cook, while Cook flounders without Richardson.

We may very well beat Wycombe tonight, but I don’t have great confidence that we’ll follow that up with another win against Oxford.

I'd agree that historically that has been the case but I am not sure it's the case lately.

Against Fleetwood they battled to the end and got an injury time winner. Against Plymouth they were the better side towards the end of the match and created 3 good chances which they really should have scored.

We certainly need to cut out the mistakes which mean we concede goals at very poor times.

The owners, management, players and non-happy-clapper fans all EXPECT progress this season. That means a top 6 finish and some decent football being played as a very minimum requirement. All this ''Just cos we bought in a load of players doesn't mean we have a right to be up near the top'' bs is capitulation and typical of the tolerance of failure and mediocrity under the Evans regime. We have probably the biggest budget in the league, we SHOULD EXPECT to be competing for the automatic promotion spots, with the play-offs as a bare minimum. So far, we are floundering and it's embarrassing. Losing to behemoths such as Burton and Cheltenham, and blowing leads against the might of Cambridge and AFC Wimbledon is totally unacceptable for this club (or least it should be).

Why should we only be allowed to judge Cook after Xmas? Thus far he has proved incapable of proper in-game management (hence why we so often lose leads) and is relying on his gis a job scouse mates as foil. The facts are this: he took a team that was 1pt off the play-offs down to 11th. We are now currently 11th this season (see the pattern here?). It's about time we started calling a spade a spade: Paul Cook has performed poorly thus far in terms of results. Fans are rightly setting monthly points targets precisely because we started so poorly and have now created a rod for our own backs. I'm not saying he should go, but he's yet to convince me he's worth the hype and apologetics that some 'fans' seem so keen on.

what would your reaction be if we'd lost 3 of our last 4 home games?

Poll: do you do judo and/or do you do voodoo?

I just wish we’d shown similar resilience in the away games which we lost from a goal up and drew from 2 goals up. And there’s been other examples of that happening in matches peppered throughout the campaign so far.

My view too. There's a long-term project, but it doesn't necessarily include Cook if it looks like he won't take us up this year.

Over £1m spent on Celina on deadline day for a one-year loan doesn't make sense otherwise.

You have to speculate to accumulate. Which doesn't definitely mean you will accumulate, but you're less likely to if you don't try.

It also depends how long "the short term" is. Given all the change, Gamechanger may well see two seasons in League 1 as short term. One to get the players, get them bedded in and working to a system, and hopefully get up at the first attempt if the stars align quickly. if they don't, then season 2 is make or break.

That neither stops you getting a marquee signing in the first season OR says getting one means it's make or break. If they can afford it (and we're assuming they can) they just go and get another one (or two) for the second season.

The truth is we don't really know what they're thinking, and IMO their decision will be made on progress. And progress doesn't necessarily mean promotion at the first attempt. If we're looking like we've made significant progress it would be folly to chuck out the manager and role the dice again. You've then got a manager with a squad that's not his own and no guarantees he's going to do any better.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I don't really think that covers what I said.

If you take that to it's logical conclusion then analysis of any game is irrelevant because the game state can never be known because it would change with any event that could have happened.

We are possibly getting side-tracked though.

All we can go on is what actually happened, and what actually happened is we missed at least 3 absolute sitters, away from home, at the leaders. So if we take that game in isolation, we shouldn't be too worried about losing it by the odd goal. The truth is it could easily have swung the other way. If we'd had begger all chances and lost 2-1 I'd be more concerned.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
