Ashton just as culpable for this mess... 21:46 - Dec 7 with 3267 views | ITFCBlues | And shouldn't get away with deflecting blame by talking rubbish. He allowed Cook to bring in his own players and a completely new squad and to sack him 4 months later is completely unacceptable. We now find ourselves with a core of players that signed to play for Cook on big wages and long term deals who quite frankly didn't look at all interested tonight. God knows if they'll fit into the new managers system as well. Not to mention, the players that clearly he and Mike O'Leary have signed, poor. Edwards is awful, headless chicken, Harper no where to be seen & Barry? Any others I've mentioned? The seasons already over and it's only the start of December. What an absolute mess.

Ashton just as culpable for this mess... on 10:07 - Dec 8 by pennblue | Well here is an article to read on how Media influences people: https://www.shoutoutuk.org/2014/10/01/medias-influence-society/ But there are many many other examples of such. It describes how Media influences people. In the olden days, this used to be Tv and Newspapers, but now we have Social Media, and Internet Forums. I don't really understand why you don't get this point. What people write on the internet, has an effect. This really is not a new, or controversial view. I want us to get back to Wycombe away, that joined up connection between players and fans. I am just not quite sure how we have gone from that, to last night in just 5-6 weeks. We are going to need to get behind a manager, and stick with them, through thick and thin, it is not going to be an easy ride. [Post edited 8 Dec 2021 10:11]

Miley Cyrus and Tom Daley! Not quite on the same level for media interest as our bunch of low level footballers.

Has he built the most balanced squad? Probably not, but I'd argue it's the most talented one overall. In the same sense as he doesn't deserve many plaudits right now he doesn't deserve much criticism yet either. I still think they were too late sacking Cook but that's between him and the owners, not just him.

Ashton just as culpable for this mess... on 09:42 - Dec 8 by management | https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town/profile-of-new-itfc-chief-executive-as An article from Stuart Watson back in April. Generally accepted that Stuart is a fair journalist and simply provides the history prior to joining Town. Watford fans are just as vociferous as Bristol City Supporters in their dislike of Ashton. Even a few comments on the net relating to Ashton's 4 months at Wycombe. |
I have a friend who is very reliable and very well connected in the football world and when Ashton came to Town, he gave me a huge warning flag and predicted disaster.

Ashton's a failed footballer, hasn't got the ability to coach or manage so he's made a career for himself as a CEO meddling in football things he hasn't got the knowledge to understand. That going to the away fans after a rare away win shows what a pathetic wannabe he is. Can you imagine Clegg or Bowden doing that? Leave the football to a Director of Football and stick to what a CEO does, appoint the capable pros and let them get on it.

Ashton just as culpable for this mess... on 09:58 - Dec 8 by ITFCBlues | Clearly a bit of both isn't it? Half the squad is Cook signings and Ashton clearly has his stamp on some others, see Edwards, Harper and probably Barry. |
That's just a massive guess though isn't it ?

My mates mate who knows a mate who know someone who kicks a football said blah blah blah…….absolute cobblers to blame Ashton. Can’t any of you idiots see what he’s done, the recruitment, the quality of player he’s brought in. I admit, everything is not rosy in the garden at present but let’s take you back to the Evans era, who was running the club, who the manager was, what the football was like…..there’s an improvement everywhere . It will take time, it will come good you just have to shuffle the jigsaw to get all the pieces in the right order. I’m just glad I’m not in a trench with you lot facing “zee Germans” in ‘44 as you’ll be blaming everyone bar yourself! Get a grip chaps & support your team!

Seeing how G20 dealt with Cook I'm confident that the minute they see Ashton as a problem they will deal with him too. So far Ashton hasn't done much wrong. I'm still waiting for people to tell me ( without hindsight ) what he should have done differently.
Ashton just as culpable for this mess... on 11:20 - Dec 8 with 851 views | MaySixth | Not only is it a mess I feel like the board and owners have completely gone against what they have been preaching since starting at the club. This is the point. Ashton is an employee. If he doesn’t get it right and quickly, he’s history. If nothing else, the Americans have already show they don’t p1ss about. It’s how they do things. For all the targeting/blame game/evidence of friends who know somebody’s dog, it is notable that neither Lee Johnson (fired by him) or Pearson (employed by him) have criticised him, as far as I know. For those who have moved the gunsight onto Ashton, please show me where they have. People screamed for Cook’s removal. He’s been removed. Other people criticise the timing, lack of support for Cook, Ashton not controlling what Cook did (bomb squad and rubbish signings), Ashton criticised for making signings (no evidence), Ashton criticised based on believed Bristol numbskulls’ comments. You couldn’t make this up.

Disagree, if you look at the bigger picture. The club structure and set up is way, way better than it was in the Evans era. We at least have a structure something like a large, professionally run club, rather than Evans thinking he can do everything, or getting LON to wear another hat. And Ashton didn’t appoint PC or choose the players. And money may have been spent, but much was recouped from player sales or just dumping the dead wood. I’m not saying I am a fan of Ashton, the jury is still out for me, but some of your points don’t stack up.

Ashton just as culpable for this mess... on 09:43 - Dec 8 by Churchman | Warned by the Bristol amoebas. Well, if they say so from their lofty perch of a new ground, new facilities and Championship football, it must be true, by that logic, Ashton clearly stopped them fulfilling their destiny of Premier League. They were PL in waiting, according to the single digit IQ brigade on their forum. And their views differ from that of the local media. Ashton had met the owners a few years ago. He knew O’Leary, who negotiated the deal. It was a logical appointment. People work with people. Often with people they know. They may not be the best but it is how it is. It made me laugh at the bleating around Cook appointing his mates. Of course he did! You bring in people you can work with. It’s the same the world over. |
Window lickers to amoebas….we are growing on you then?
Ashton just as culpable for this mess... on 12:16 - Dec 8 with 782 views | jayessess | In hindsight, this Summer was a very awkward scenario for Ashton. We had a boss who signed up for the Evans-style all-powerful manager role, plus an incoming regime that was looking to establish a very different setup, with a much more limited job spec for the first team manager. We had a whole load of unwanted players out of contract, plus a few more under-contract players who were always likely to move on. But we didn't have the recruitment department we envisaged up and running yet. So, what are the options here? For me they were: (a) Dismiss the manager, hire someone who fits the head coach role and improvise a recruitment room on the fly. (b) Work with the manager, use their expertise to draw up a list of players and go out and get as many as you can. (c) Leave the manager in post and tell them there will be no great transformation this Summer, we'll set out to keep players where we can, make a few judicious purchases and then you can see where we get. I don't think any of the 3 are great options. We went for (b) which was a fair call, once we'd decided to work with Cook. In hindsight, we probably should have gone for (a) but I think that's only apparent now.

The idea that our failure is all down to Cook is laughable. It's been a collective failure of Cook, his coaches, the players and Ashton. It's not credible that all of the signings were suggested by Cook.

Ashton is a Director of ITFC and a trustee of your Community Trust. He’s not just an “employee”. https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/officers/qoejyvFelWmT Johnson is still pally with Ashton. Nor is it in many people’s best interests to lose their job and slag off their boss. Football is a “who knows who” business and along with things like NDAs, most keep their counsel for fear if not getting another job. Any idea how much he’s on at your club….was on £540k p.a. at City (source: the club’s published accounts). I admire your defence of him. Timothy Yeo’s post has better balance though.

….and just like at City, Ashton was part of a failed “collective”. I’ve never said he was the whole reason for where we ended up, but if you want to be CEO, you have to take the responsibility and accountability that goes with it, especially when you earn a considerable sum for doing so.

I saw your lot ‘in action’ years ago. You don’t appear to have improved. Bristol Rovers was and still is the only real club in Bristol. You spouted your nonsense in the summer on this board and I’ve no doubt you’ll be celebrating our struggles with the weirds on your own boards. Why don’t you just toddle off back to them and tell them of your success in educating us? So you think another poster has a more accurate opinion than me? Whoopee. I really couldn’t care a less what your view is. You are on ignore now, so no need to respond.
