We do, in central midfield that is a big problem area for us. Whatever combination we use just doesn't appear to do the job for us and allow us to boss the game.

How does an AM boss the game?

You're talking about a number 6 really like Morsy surely?

We have probably the best AM in the division in Celina already.

An attacking midfielder bosses the game by getting on the ball and creating chances, would you say Zinedine Zidane never bossed a game,

Think you're using a different definition of AM to me. An AM in a 2 isn't going to be someone like Zidane and it's also a strange example given anyone we get is going to be rubbish in comparison.

If it's not an AM in a 2 then we have Celina.

The main priority surely has to be a LB - we have plenty in other areas of the pitch.

The two we play in central midfield regardless of who that is doesn't work for me. We need someone else alongside Morsy, especially if we are going to play a more traditional 4-4-2 formation. I know you're a big fan of Celina's, but he won't play that role he's not disciplined enough. For me, in a central two, an AM has the licence to get forward beyond the strikers, ala Matty Holland or Roy Keane, but is also expected to get back and defend, Celina won't do that. He is more suited in that 3 behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1. Where in that 3? I'm still scratching my head.

Totally agree he won't play in a 2 in CM.

But you cited AM not CM and to me those are totally different things. Perhaps just a syntax disagreement between us.

I don't think anyone in that 2 is going to be an AM under many managers, not many play with someone getting beyond the strikers from there nowadays.

You're been very pernickety here SB, AM can still play in central midfield, but he's the one that can bomb on, where someone like Morsy plays the holding role. Perhaps I'm showing my age here?

Unless Walton returns to Brighton, then another decent goalkeeper is an absolute must.

I don't think I am, to me they are totally different positions nowadays.

Can you think of many teams that play with 2 in CM where one of them bombs on beyond the strikers? I just don't think it's done much anymore because it is only really applicable with something like 442 which isn't played as much as it used to me.

It's more usual now to have 2 CM who sit deeper and direct the play with an AM like Celina further forward to create and get beyond the strikers.

It's pretty dependent on how the new manager wants to set up the team though. Certainly agree the 2 CM we play at the moment don't do that. Harper might but he's shown very little evidence of it.

If we are going to play 442 then you're right that we probably need someone more dynamic in CM.

Ashton is on record by saying that if we didn't have a manager by January, we would still recruit because we have the department to do so

The structure we now have should, in theory, put a stop to a new manager requiring a whole new squad. The new manager or coach works with the tools he is given

I think we'll agree to disagree, but I think this is me showing my age more than anything else. When I played all those years ago in a CM there was a holding midfielder and one that would push forwards recognised as the attacking one. I suppose off the top of my head, Conor Gallagher (the lad on loan from Chelsea) does this well at Crystal Palace. Football goes in cycles, 4-2-3-1 seems the flavour of the month at the moment for managers, but mark my words things will change again. A manager will play a different style, get success and then be lauded for reinventing the wheel. I always enjoyed seeing the attacking midfielder break from the middle of the park, play a quick wall pass on the edge of box and get in a score.

Former Chelsea academy product.

He is a player Who Johnson and Ashton bust a gut to sign for us for £3.5m in the summer of 2019, having been on loan in 2018/19 with us. They missed out on him early summer, signed Szmodics and then Palmer became available so they signed him 3 days before the season started, forcing Jamie Paterson on loan to Derby.

He was on £25k p,w. at Chelsea - fact checked to a court appearance where he had to state his salary (£110k p.m), and the story is that he signed for us on the same wage on a 4 year deal.

He has just over 18 months of that contract left, is currently not training with the first team.

I’m sure we are touting him about, but I don’t see that there will be many takers if we want 1) a fee and 2) his wages covered.

I could imagine us loaning him out and us still covering 50% of his wages….or someone taking him on a free and taking in his wages.

He is a talented ball player, works hard (but not intelligently), but has struggled with fitness, partly because he never really got a run in our side. Capable of the brilliant. Needs good movement around him.

I would imagine Ashton would see him as a real coup / statement of intent.

Hes a luxury player when I've watched him, we already have some of these, I'm not sure we need this at this moment in L1 plus the rest of our squad.
