Recent book about Aberdeen's European Nights 12:00 - Jan 1 with 1764 views | WeWereZombies | Town warrant an entire chapter, Peter Weir says that when Aberdeen drew holders Ipswich in the UEFA cup he didn't have to look up who any of the players were, they were so well known. Sounds like Alex Ferguson was still reeling from being taught a football lesson by Liverpool the previous season and was determined to thoroughly research and tactically better us. Dismissive comments attributed to Mick Mills did little to dissipate Aberdeen's resolve and Mick was given a torrid time as a result, his worst ever two games in a Town shirt? After the match Mel Henderson wrote to Aberdeen hoping to put the record straight and, in fairness, they published his letter in their next programme. The chapter in the book also uses a lot of remarks by Mariner to describe what happened in the home and away legs. Sir Bobbly sent the team out after half time in the second leg with the assessment that if they scored the whole stadium would be lifted and we would not stand much chance but if we scored the crowd would lose heart and we could manage the game out. Mariner's assessment of the circumstances that led to Weir's fifty fifth minute 'not a Worldy, just a decent shot' coming about through Mills getting unexpectedly beaten and Cooper not saving a shot he normally would have done is a little bit poignant. https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Aberdeen_FC_European_Nights.html?id=K5GJz

Up to then you just felt we were going to win against whoever we were playing. Shortly afterwards with Sir Bobby and key players leaving the writing was on the wall but that feels like a real turning point.

We also played them in a testimonial match for Drew Jarvis at Pittodrie in August 82. Here is another link to PM's take on the UEFA Cup matches https://allybegg.com/paul-mariner-over-two-legs-we-underestimated-aberdeen/

We still had a great 81/82 season, for me it was Roma the following season and the accompanying poor start, although with hindsight a 3-4 loss to that Roma side was no disgrace.

Nicely called up, thanks Will probably undermine the quiz question I was going to follow this thread up with but I will go ahead with it anyway. Aberdeen were the first club to do what in a major tournament anywhere in the World?

Recent book about Aberdeen's European Nights on 07:56 - Jan 2 with 724 views | Chrisd | We rightly talk about us during that period and earlier as having a very good side, one of the best in England in fact, but Aberdeen had a wonderful team back then and under the guidance of a manager that wasn’t half bad in Alex Ferguson 😉. Hugely underrated, that Aberdeen’s side was full of players that ended up having major careers in football and a manager whose achievements are likely to go unrivalled.
