In theory I agree that knighthoods are a good idea to honour someone who has shown upmost dedication to their careers and have done a lot of good. But the honours system - in a lot of cases- just seems to be used as a perk for the old boys club.

I know I’m in the minority in terms of my republicanism but the House of Lords should be abolished.

Also, why should someone by called ‘Lord’ etc simply because his great great grandfather was knighted by the then King. Get rid of that as well.

The House of Lords is an odd one, full of old duffers who just sign in and out for their cheque - but can be useful as a stupid law blocker.

Personally I could care less about Sir this and that or Lord whatsisname, I am not an angry man and don't get upset about it - but bloody Gavin Williamson??

I mean, what the actual feck??

It's a bit deeper than that. Cadwalladr is basically implying that Williamson was whistleblowing about Russian interference and the knighthood is Johnson's way of bribing him to silence.

Given what we know about johnson's links with Russia, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

If this is all rubbish, then we move on and all we have is some paranoid journos who've added 2 + 2 and come up with 5. If not, this could be the largest scandal in UK politics ever. Imagine a PM as a foreign agent. It's nuts and unbelievable (which makes you think whether that's the exact reason it should be seriously considered).

Harold Wilson was a foreign agent.

Definite info.

"Mr Williamson has not commented so far on his honour." Of course he hasn't he got his knighthood to shut him up.
