The academy is punching it's weight currently. And if we didn't cash in on those players, I'd imagine that in at least one case by working with McKenna and in the new modern set up that their values may have significantly increased. |
I get that but KD himself said last summer that the Academy hasn’t produced another Wickham in 10 years. He and to an extent Alan Lee alluded to how things have come apart at the club over the years and the Academy isn’t exempt. Yes, we got some money back for the players you mention, but given what it cost to develop them I would have hoped just one player would have raised £3m not five. Woolfenden may well ruin my argument of course - I hope so. This is not a criticism of KD Klug or the staff - they’re victims of how the club has been run. Kieron is clearly respected and is a good coach. One thing I noticed in his interview was his status reluctance to deal with the hard part - dropping players and moving them on. I think if he wants to get in the management game he needs to get stuck into all aspects of the job, not just the coaching side. A move for him might just give him the opportunity and experience he needs as there’s limited opportunity here at the moment. We all need a change of scene now and and KD is no exception. I hope he does well wherever he goes.

We sold him to Bristol City for £3.5m and they sold for £20m. That's a season-changing amount of money rather than a few hundred grand here and there. Since Mings, have we scouted and developed anyone apart from Downes who could make us that sort of profit? It's also about quality. Apart from Downes, the others have mostly gone on to play at our level or below in the case of Drinan. We develop affection for the likes of Bishop and Lankester because they are "one of our own" but have any of them earned rave reviews since they left? Dozzell, for all the praise he got here - including from me - how has it worked out at QPR? Take your point about Woolfenden and Ndaba. But I don't think there's any harm in scrutinising the output of the academy overall. I think getting Huws, Judge, Chambers, Skuse, Sears and Edwards off the wage bill probably helped with the summer recruitment as much as the sales of the younger players. |
The Adam Webster deal was a great deal for Bristol City, but that is because they were able to take advantage of naivete of a poorly run club - when Mick was here and Everton(?) were linked with Webster I heard via good sources that there is no way we'd even countenance selling him as he was the sort of player who would be worth 8 figures if he puts it together. Downes is now being talked of as a £10m player after half a season with Swansea. The sad fact of the matter is, that in League 1 then the academy can't make money - because players are simply not worth anything here - the fact we got 7 figures for 2 players in a depressed market shows that we had talent here in that way. The academy will be, and needs to be, scrutinised - but the reality is for me it was a gift for Ashton to come into as about the only part of the club that was functioning - if we were in the Championship and getting similar amount of players through we'd be one of the best in the country - that's obviously a long way off but Ashton's total reticence to go Cat 1 surprised me and was something that surprised Dyer. I'm sure they have grand plans for it all, and interested to see what that entails, but think it is being a bit unfarily criticised - we can't bring through superstars any more in reality

Interesting what you mentioned further up the thread about targeting highly rated youngsters at big clubs as I'd heard similar. Does make me wonder if they want to scale back our traditional academy path (hence not going Cat 1) and go more down the route of picking up players later in their development - who have been coached in Cat 1 academies. Enticing them here with 1st team football opportunities under a first team manager with a demonstrable record of improving young players. Easier said than done, particularly when you are in L1.

That was my view on it, how are we going to attract someone from say Chelsea, who has played no 1st team footy, without the promise of first team football....and with the squad we have in L1 how good would they need to be to deserve it. Feels a hard circle to square. Why come and play in our B team or U23s?

Ben Knight is the sort of player that would fit that mould - but he's struggled for minutes at Crewe so wouldn't stand a chance here trying to dislodge Chaplin, Celina and Aluko. Louie Barry is another example. [Post edited 22 Mar 2022 11:55]
