Toilets at work panic 13:44 - Mar 24 with 4560 viewsunbelievablue

I find myself in the office today, for the first time in a little while. It turns out the toilets on my floor have been turned into gender neutral toilets since I last used them, including removing urinals, adding extra cubicles etc., which is great - I'm all for inclusion.

However, I missed the memo, and I must have been on autopilot as after doing the bizniz I opened the cubicle door to find a lady washing her hands, at which point I totally and utterly panicked.

I guess the takeaway here is: try and be more mindful, and less on autopilot.

As others have moved the topic away from just work toilets, thought I'd throw in my own turd tales...

Interrailing through Europe as a teenager, was waiting at a small station in Italy for the last train of the day, which ended up being cancelled. Probably about a dozen passengers left, so the station master opened the waiting room and allowed us to crash there for the night until the first train. Anyway, station had one of those holes in the floor with footrests toilets - everytime someone went there, they'd return in silence looking white as a sheet...when I went myself, I realised why...someone had missed the hole and left a turd the size of a builder's forearm just next to it (30 years on, swear I struggle to remember seeing a bigger one since then) Eventually, someone in the waiting room said "So...did you see that sh1t in the toilet?", and everyone burst out laughing with a chorus of "Bloody Hell"'s and "I Know"'s.

Oh, and the other story - a friend allowed 4 mates to crash at his following his stag night, and one of them took a dump during the night in the swing-top kitchen bin, which was discovered by his fiancee the following morning; somehow she decided which of the 4 was the culprit (no idea how) and has been frosty towards him ever since. Personally, I reckon she did it herself so she could have an excuse to cut him dead...

I remember the footplate specials in Italy. I stayed on a camp site on the Lido just north of Venice and there they were in all their glory. Even had a crude shower attachment above them. The stench …….well, you could chew on it.

One of the lads dropped his watch down it. He managed to get a lot of his arm down the hole, but it was gone forever. Either to be recovered by Tony Robinson in a 1000 years time or it melted. All he could say was ‘my ffing girlfriend will ffing kill me’ endlessly. We showed utmost sympathy… maybe not and told him, in hysterics, to keep the arm well away from us until it had rotted off.

Sound, sympathetic advice.

Why can’t trans women just use womens toilets rather than make it awkward for everyone else?

In what way is it awkward for anyone else? Do you have much experience with using gender neutral bathrooms?

Many CIS women, rightly or wrongly, don't want to share a CIS-female-only space with trans women. Trans people, whether F to M or M to F, have very real concerns about which bathroom they use based on a variety of factors, in a lot of cases amounting to their own ideas of their identity, sexuality, and what others may think of them using a certain designated bathroom.

I just don't understand why you'd take aim at this - seems very small-minded.

I hope this is taken in the spirit it is intended and I won't just be attacked for asking a question.

You said: Many CIS women, rightly or wrongly, don't want to share a CIS-female-only space with trans women.

How do we go from that to the answer being forcing them to share bathrooms with everyone? I can completely understand women not wanting gender neutral bathrooms and not feeling safe (because of men, not trans women).

So rather than share the space with trans women, the solution is to share it with everyone? How does that work?

No worries, J2.

I'm not speaking from much experience aside from what I've heard and read anecdotally, so not sure if I'm the expert on these things but I'll give it a go!

Honestly, I think the point you raise is more of the real concern, whereas CIS women being afraid of transwomen in female-only bathrooms is one of the ideas which spurred it. That is, generally speaking, a total myth. There have been transpeople throughout society for hundreds of years using shared spaces. So far as I'm aware, sexual assaults by transpeople on CIS women are virtually nil, and it is more a general uneasiness about sharing the same space - wrong though it may be.

I'm not really sure what the answer is, but whether the space is neutral or gender-defined, it's not really going to stop any potential sex criminal. In fact, I'd say the more users across one shared facility has, the greater potential there could be to stop something like that happening. If the footfall increases, surely there is more awareness and people could raise the alarm if it were?

How does it work? Pretty simple. You go into a gender neutral bathroom, open a stall, do what you need to do and leave.

I'm not convinced. Quite frankly I would not want my female relations sharing a bathroom with men. You make the point about more people passing through. What about when it's quiet? In a big shopping centre half an hour before it closes?

I have zero issue with trans people wanting to feel comfortable.

I think women have some genuine concerns which are glossed over in the name of inclusivity (again I feel the need to say i'm not against being inclusive, far from it. Life is too short to be a pr1ck for no reason and make someone else miserable). Not just with the bathroom issue either. I have no idea what the answer is. Someone is going to lose out because there's no perfect solution and it looks like it's going to be the right of women to have separate spaces from men.

If I'm totally honest I think the sexual assault thing is over-exaggerated in this scenario and mainly a figment of people's imaginations. Not downplaying the seriousness of it, of course, but it seems pretty baseless given the few cases I can see were reported.

Most sexual assault victims are known personally by their attackers before the fact, including many who are already married or in a relationship. To use it as an argument against gender neutral spaces for me feels disproportionate to say the least.

It is indeed a tricky knoblem and one we'll probably never get to the bottom of. But that is the modern world and there are some uncomfortable things we have to ask at times.

Anyhoo, I'm off for a beer or six. We can chat bidets tomorrow.

Only point I would make is the small number of assaults could be down to the fact this is quite uncommon at the moment?

Enjoy.
