Thompson's Southend Stunner 4th Apr 2020 09:00
Southend United were meant to be the visitors to Portman Road on Saturday, which coincidentally is the 28th anniversary of the Blues’ 2-1 victory over the Shrimpers at Roots Hall in which Neil Thompson scored a brilliant and hugely important last-gasp winner as Town continued their pursuit of the Second Division title. TWTD spoke to the former left-back to hear how he remembers that day, that season and his time at Portman Road. 17

Great article. I was there!
Occasional reminder that the Lyall promotion is the greatest achievement in the club’s history.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Poll: With Evans taking 65% in Huddersfield, is the Banter Era over?

It’s not the greatest achievement in the club’s history as well you know.

Without a doubt it is. We were one of the best teams in the world in 81. 78 was superb but things were a bit more even then, same for the Division One win. It was possible to compete in a fairly even playing field.
The Lyall promotion was achieved by a team of misfits cast offs old timers and youth players with zero money spent in the face of Blackburn Derby and Newcastle all spending loads.

I enjoyed that. I think it's the only time I've been to Roots hall. But I can't say I remember that much about the game apart from some carnage at the end!

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

I ended up in the players lounge afterward, went with a guy that knew Chris Powell quite well.

I was quite inebruated at this point and remember trying to chat to Stockwell who looked terrified, made excuses and disappeared.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

I went to Roots Hall the last time we played. Local club, sorry to see how low they have sunk.

It was such a special time wasn’t it? Football was back in vogue after Italia 90, and Ipswich were riding that wave. That is when the North stand genuinely rocked, with away fans in the same end separated by a wire fence. TWTD indeed!

Neil Thompson also backed the Grand National winner that day (Party Politics).

30 years ago today I was watching Sunderland win their FA Cup semi final against Norwich.

What a weekend that was.

Haha! I genuinely believe it. It’s the best thing the club have ever done.
