Well, although I agree with you, it still doesn't address that St George's Day isn't a comparison with a religious occasion.

Technically it is, being a saints day venerating a Christian martyr.

I suppose so but not the same thing as a religious festival.

Now St Patrick's Day, St Andrew's...those would be the more appropriate comparisons.

You can see why the Irish take theirs a bit more seriously. If the rules were no beer allowed on St Patricks Day it would be far less popular.

I think the veneration of the saints is a bit more of a Catholic than a Protestant thing so that may play into why traditionally it isn't such a big thing. St George's Day seems much more a patriotic and nationalistic rather than a religious thing now.
