Pizza ovens 23:07 - May 26 with 4695 views | Swansea_Blue | They seem to be all the rage for lefty bumfest types with more money than sense. Are the commercial options worth it? I keep getting spammed ads from Ooni (pic below), but you’re looking at ~£500 for a 16” multi fuel oven. Cooking in a couple of minutes sounds good, but otherwise Domino’s sounds a better bet! Anyone built their own, any hints, tips, etc?

Pizza ovens on 13:54 - May 27 by EdwardStone | If I recall correctly, Bully was planning to build his pizza oven on the flat roof of his garage. He was slightly concerned that the roof might not be strong enough. I can only assume that he ate so much delicious pizza that he fell through. I have been scanning the local papers for his home town to see if there was a headline about Pizza implicated garage roof tragedy , but I haven't seen anything |
He was enquiring about the possibility that's right. In fact I'm sure you offered some expert advice. I think he decided to play it safe and go for the back garden on solid ground in the end although currently there is no way of knowing. He does owe us an end to the saga though as to leave the story open-ended like that doesn't bring the necessary closure. [Post edited 28 May 2022 13:03]

Have you got any evidence for that?

Got to be. All this talk of gas cooking outside, that's not right. The only reason I don't stack up a pile of logs to cook with indoors is it's not a standard acceptable practice and could invalidate a few things. And I don't have an Arga.

We got a dual fuel Gozney Roccbox a year or so ago and it's superb. The gas is a lot more convenient than wood to use and it's heats the oven up a lot quicker it is also more controlable. However using wood for fuel is definitely more interesting and authentic. I'm not convinced that there is a vast difference in the taste as the pizza is not in the oven long enough to absorb much wood smoke. We still use ours regularly and it is extremely convenient to have dough balls in the freezer. The ones from Ooni are very good, but Asda's own brand ones not so. Our local Co-op has just started selling dough balls too, we have tried them once and they seemed pretty good.

Pizza ovens on 08:34 - May 27 by Deano69 | Suspect they are the 2020’s equivalent of a Breville toaster. Used once, pain to store, pain to clean, results disappointing. I have been to a party with one on the go. One half decent slice per pizza was the success ratio. Not a huge pizza fan to be honest, unless in Italy, then I am partial! |
Ahh the Breville sandwich toaster. It looked magnificent when taken out of the box and there the joy ended. Key moments were the lava heat of the cheese when some squirted onto my chin. The burns! Secondly, the remains that were welded to the plates. The builders of the Bismarck would have been happy with that. Useless device. As for pizza, I am with Lucan in preferring something on toast. Pizza is ok but why spend £100s on a special device to cook it? Just bung it under the grill in the oven. It’s all cardboard with topping anyway. The way to go is to buy a cheap £1 cheese and tomato pizza from Asda. Add additional topping - cheese and anchovy works, as does ham, cooked sausage, pepperoni, sardine, a bit of onion - anything you want apart from pineapple depending on mood. Under the grill, job done for no money.

Pizza ovens on 08:54 - May 27 by Leaky | Why bother just buy a pizza stone & use your BBQ |
Doesn’t get hot enough in the right places, ok if you want a burnt base and not cooked on the top but that’s a no from me

Pizza ovens on 08:21 - May 29 with 613 views | azuremerlangus | Had some great pizza in Sicily and I can achieve similar results with my Weber kettle BBQ using a pizza stone. OK so it doesn’t have the same drama and sense of occasion that a pizza oven has but uses less fuel, and of course works as a BBQ and smoker too. 14 years old and still going strong - probably the best £450 I’ve ever spent.

That looks an awesome bit of kit for the price. I was looking at similar but at £3k!
