Pizza ovens 23:07 - May 26 with 4694 views | Swansea_Blue | They seem to be all the rage for lefty bumfest types with more money than sense. Are the commercial options worth it? I keep getting spammed ads from Ooni (pic below), but you’re looking at ~£500 for a 16” multi fuel oven. Cooking in a couple of minutes sounds good, but otherwise Domino’s sounds a better bet! Anyone built their own, any hints, tips, etc?

Pizza ovens on 00:49 - May 27 by Lord_Lucan | I've kiboshed the oven version But, cheese on toast is a beautiful snack or lazy meal - it is a magnificent thing. Pizza is just one of those things that you end up eating and and you don't know why, I tend to not bother with it. |
Couldn’t agree more. I’ve never understood the attraction of pizza. Fish and chips too - better than pizza but there are many nicer ways to serve fish than having it coated in batter!
Pizza ovens on 08:34 - May 27 with 1145 views | Deano69 | Suspect they are the 2020’s equivalent of a Breville toaster. Used once, pain to store, pain to clean, results disappointing. I have been to a party with one on the go. One half decent slice per pizza was the success ratio. Not a huge pizza fan to be honest, unless in Italy, then I am partial!

Pizza ovens on 08:40 - May 27 with 1137 views | clive_baker | Have to say Ooni's are pretty good. I don't own one but I've had many nice pizza's off one at friends places. When you consider the cost of a Domino's you probably don't need to have too many pizza's off one of these to get your money back, and they're much tastier and healthier than the doughy crap dominos will deliver. Ooni have killed it, very much right place right time when lockdowns hit and hospitality closed too. I think they were Scotland's fasted growing business at one point. They're great, they are a pricey bit of kit though.

Pizza ovens on 09:33 - May 27 with 1081 views | ITFC_RDM | Had ours about 2 years. Really good easy to use. hardest part is remembering to take the dough out the freezer in time. If you do remember you've got a really good pizza ready in 5 mins start to finish. great for entertaining! Stick to Ooni, got friends who have other (cheaper) versions and nowhere near as good.

Pizza ovens on 23:18 - May 26 by jeera | Never did find out how Bully got on with his. I was quite invested in that and a bit disappointed at the lack of updates following his unexpected departure. Speaking for myself, (I have no experience whatsoever with these and am not qualified in any way), the type there looks too glossy and fake and I would prefer the home brick built, clay lined sort of thing. You know, the shiny silver and all that doesn't exactly shout authenticity and natural wood burning flavours and all that. |
My dad built a bbq with a clay pot oven thing on the side at his place. The clay oven pot is brilliant for pizzas, but he still wants to build a proper one at some point. Agree though - looks a lot smarter. https://mickedwards.wixsite.com/mysite

Depends where you get it from IMO. Americans murdered pizza with all the thick base, stuffed crust b0llocks. Why can't they just leave something be? Chicago Pizza pies ffs, they're absolutely rotten. You can get some 'Naples-like' pizza in the UK if you go to the right places though. None of this Dominos crap.

That's true, though I'm yet to find any near me in SE London. The best pizza I've had over here has been from a pizza oven on a firepit. Making your own then flash-cooking it at silly degrees is the way forward. Of course, you can't get the proper tomatoes...

Pizza ovens on 23:32 - May 26 by Swansea_Blue | That’s a fair point and pretty much what I’m thinking. Rustic, brick built and ideally with burly Italians fanning the flames would be more my style, but it sounds like a lot of work. I’m sure the commercial options work well, but yeah, lots of unnecessary shiny metal and silly money. Their usp is getting to >500°C in a few minutes. I reckon you’d get that with a wood fire in a home built kiln after a little longer, for a fraction of the cost. The only trouble is, I struggled to lay the missus to produce our kids. Laying bricks is well beyond my skills and ‘can be bothered’ level 😂 [Post edited 26 May 2022 23:34]

Pizza ovens on 07:29 - May 27 by blue62 | Does that mean I’m a lefty bum fest type! I bought the gas version, was about £275 I think and use it a lot, probably costs less that the take always you get. Easy to use, just don’t take you eye off the pizza as they are done in about 60 seconds. Right must get on with my lefty bum fest life. |
Yes, the gas only ones are a bit cheaper aren't they. I wasn't sure if they were as 'authentic', but it sounds like they do the job. Anyone with an outdoor pizza oven is a lefty bumfester, by definition! The champagne socialist type though.

That makes sense. We're lacking anything decent and local in this part of the world.

Pizza ovens on 23:40 - May 26 by jeera | If you were busy dreaming about burley Italians it's not surprising you and the missus were struggling... It's not the cost for me. I just like authenticity and am a bit stuck in those ideals I suppose. That looks clinical and not at all foody if you know what I mean. Like an oversized toaster laid on its side or something. It can't be hard to build one, and whilst at it add a bbq to one side and a tandoor to the other. Think of the satisfaction and bragging rights. And great food. Pop down to the local builder's merchants and they'll put you right no worries. Looking forward to the step by step project photos. |
We've a tiny courtyard church garden and I researched and planned building a wood fired oven / tandoor myself, but the materials are bonkers expensive. I then looked at importing a 'kleftiko oven' from Cyprus or Greece but they weigh an absolute tonne which made shipping pointless. I found the company that makes the built in BBQ's you see in the South of France - but again, they are really pricey for what they are. In the end we got this standalone bbq Ozpig - https://ozpig.co.uk It's an Australian beast of pure cast iron that looks like Ned Kelly would have fashioned in to body armour. It burns anything, stays hot for hours (we use it as an outdoor heater through the winter) and cooks a dream. Would struggle to do a pizza on it, put have been using it as a tandoor, with metal skewers of meat placed directly in to the charcoals and naan on the outer side. Pricey, but after the impending nuclear fallout, amongst the rubble it'll remain intact along with Kate Moss smoking a fag and cockroaches

Yup lots cheaper, quicker and easier to store away. Makes a change from a BBQ, we've used ours loads over the past 2 years. Also partial to a pizza and a glass of Champagne!
Pizza ovens on 13:40 - May 27 with 860 views | itfcjoe | I've got big green egg equivalent which was similar money - and you can get them just as hot and cook pizzas at the very top of them. Not as quick to get to the temperature no doubt, but once you've got the heat up high they are superb for pizzas

Pizza ovens on 07:29 - May 27 by blueprint | I have always said the same, “glorified cheese on toast”. I don’t mind a proper pizza with just a few toppings like Anchovies and Olives but it is never my first choice. I will only eat it if everyone else in the family wants it and I’m outvoted. And as for the sloppy takeaway muck you get from the likes of Domino’s or Papa Johns…. |
No wonder you don’t like pizza if you’re putting anchovies and olives on it.

No. You are not a lefty bumfest. You made a chice to buy one, that's all. However, Swansea Blue definitely IS a Lefty bum fest because the algorithms have targeted him thinking he's a Lefty bum fest who likes pizza.

If I recall correctly, Bully was planning to build his pizza oven on the flat roof of his garage. He was slightly concerned that the roof might not be strong enough. I can only assume that he ate so much delicious pizza that he fell through. I have been scanning the local papers for his home town to see if there was a headline about Pizza implicated garage roof tragedy , but I haven't seen anything

Pizza ovens on 00:07 - May 27 by Lord_Lucan | You are fecking crazy Pizza is basically cheese on toast with some unwarranted extras. This is why I have suspicions about Italians, how can you have cheese on toast as a national dish? What I find more explicable is that other nations claim to have invented Pizza fist - my daft Turkish friend "Paul from Skegness " always harps on about it. Why on earth would you admit to creating this monstrosity and why would you want to claim it as a national dish? It's madness! And you want to pay money for an oven that cooks this is some way? |
Ragu Alla Bolognese Is the national dish of Italy.
