Oh aye, no judgement on my part about his decision.

It was me that was making the judgement I suppose that as a professional cricket player he had to make a living but other Irish players who played in England did play for their country of birth at the time. Ed Joyce was back and forward around that time. When I made the decision in 2001 to try and play for England, it was with a view to trying to play Test cricket which is the pinnacle of the game and which of course Ireland doesn't play. While I strongly believe I'm good enough to play Test cricket for England, I've taken the decision now to try and play for Ireland again. There are a few reasons for this, with the most obvious being that I'm a born and bred Irishman. Secondly, I feel I have a lot to offer to Irish cricket. I had a very successful 2009 with Sussex winning the Most Valuable Player award for the Friends Provident trophy and also two winners medals in theTwenty20 Cup and Nat West Pro40 competition. I feel I'm playing the best cricket of my career and would like to bring this form with me to help Ireland be even more successful on the world stage, a success which I am committed to running in tandem with my Sussex career, in the same way that other Irish players have satisfied club and country commitments really well. – Ed Joyce, May 2010 I'm assuming Eoin stayed with England because he was more successful.

Wonder if there’s a coaching role in the offing.

A brave decision by Morgan, although also pre-empting the continual debate about whether he should be dropped, given his poor form and recent injury record. He could make an excellent white ball coach, although a job at one of the franchises will appeal more than the huge amount of travelling with England or another national squad. He wants to keep playing 20/20 and the Hundred, so not hanging up his bat for a few years.

Like Chris Froome wheezing his way asthmatically in the Tour de France, actually representing his own country could have made a huge difference to the sport.

Eoin Morgan retires from International Cricket on 13:43 - Jun 27 with 419 views | Chrisd | He's had a stellar one day career both with Ireland and England. Where he took us from after the shambles of the 2015 World Cup, where England looked lightyears behind the top nations. His captaincy and mindset helped to transform us into 50 over World Champions and regular contenders in the T20 competitions. Enjoy your retirement skipper, it's fully deserved.
