Penzance here we come! 06:38 - Jul 15 with 3847 views | dusseldorf_blue | After 3 years without more than a 2 day trip to England, today finally we sail from Hook of Holland to Harwich (postponed 4 times!) After such a long time without being able to visit I am actually proper excited! Tomorrow morning drive from Harwich to Penzance for a week, a few days London and then a week in Essex with family / friends. Icing on the cake will, hopefully, be getting tickets on Monday for the Bolton game Any tips for cool things to do in, or around, Penzance greatly appreciated. Penzance here we come! on 19:20 - Jul 15 by Swansea_Blue | So that explains why you’re the way you are I love the area. We used to have family holidays down there when I was a kid; always the Easter fortnight as you could almost guarantee good weather. I had a massive crush on the daughter of the people who owned one of the restaurants backing onto the harbour in Mousehole lol. Caught my one and only Ballan Wrasse from the harbour wall there too - a big one too, although maybe that’s just time playing tricks on my memory. We always used to stay in a rental house in St Just - that whole end of the peninsula (except Lands End) is fantastic. Newlyn fish market was always a highlight - turn up when the boats came in at silly o’clock and you could pick up lemon sole that barely fit under the grill. TWTD. |
Easter often seems to be better weather than August which is strange. I feel sorry for the people who spend silly money on hotels in places like St Ives at peak time only for it to p1ss it down. I agree that Lands End is overrated compared to the other stuff to do down here - the walk down to Sennen is nice but there are plenty of similar walks which are less busy and in more accessible locations. It feels as if a lot of people just go there to take their photo with the John O'Groats sign.

One of my favourites was sea kayaking off the Lizard with curious seals that come right up to the kayak! As an aside I looked at the weather forecast and it’s a full 14c cooler there Monday/Tuesday. Crazy!

Penzance here we come! on 10:46 - Jul 15 by SaleAway | On the foody front, Porthleven is creating a real buzz for high quality food/drink at the moment. The Mussel Shoal on the waterfront is great to dip into for some fresh fish, local craft beers. |
Is the Mussel shoal in Penzance?

Some of these are further afield than Penzance but definitely worth travelling for or seeking out if you're nearby: Lizard Point - the most Southerly point in UK, with many nice walks and much more naturally beautiful than Lands End, which unfortunately was bought and commercialised to the extent that the famous signpost is owned by a local photography company and you're expected to pay for a photo. Nanjizal beach - secluded beach, beatiful views and many caves etc to explore. Always watch out for the tide. Mousehole is a pretty little village to explore, near Penzance - the Rock pool cafe is a nice spot to stop. Includes a rock pool below where kids can paddle and look for any creatures washed up by the waves. Trevaylor Woods - they belong in a fairytale and remain somewhat less known. Whilst the beaches swarm with sunburnt brits then head here for some quiet, whereby you can wander in the shade, paddle in the stream or play with some of the rope swings. Only needs an hour or two, but could stay longer. St Ives - Worth a day trip. The Hidden Hut - fantastic beach hut cafe, basically with a private beach in front. Do get there early as they can run out of options. I wish it was more of a secret so I could keep it to myself. Quite far, so maybe if passing by. Fowey (Foy) - one of the nicest towns on the south coast. A bit far from Penzance but I would encourage a stop on your way through if you wish to break up a journey etc. Have fun!
