Your Favourite/Best Town captain - on 13:53 - Aug 8 by Churchman | I can only really comment on those I’ve seen. While I was privileged to see Bill Baxter play, I was too young to judge him, so I’ll leave him aside along with Nelson, McLuckie, Parker etc. For me, Mills by a distance. Second, Matt Holland. In many ways he was the face of the team in Burley’s time. Ok, I get he couldn’t tackle a hot dinner, but I thought he was an all round good player, especially alongside more creative ones like Dyer and Magilton. Third place, Jason De Vos. I thought he was a smashing Captain and actually a half way decent Centre Half. Your Favourite/Best Town captain - on 08:17 - Aug 8 by ElephantintheRoom | I have a certain fondness for Billy Baxter who was something of an inspiration until he fell out with Robson. Never really took to happy clappy Holland who always seemed a bit lightweight and totally insincere to me - a feeling sort of confirmed by the manner of his departure. And Morsy is something of a cowardly thug (so far) - but could be a poor man’s Roy Keane type of skipper in the lower divisions I suppose. Other than that your list is hard to disagree with |
You are wrong about Holland. He was not insincere in the least. Nor was he lightweight. I never thought he was much of a tackler as mentioned elsewhere, but he wasn’t that type of player. Matt Holland was a box to box style player who did a lot of the simple things well. He was a great foil for the likes of Magilton and KD. He was also a midfielder who could score a few goals. When he arrived, I saw him play a pre season game I think against Gillingham. He struck me immediately as a perfect Burley style player for the way he wanted us to play and a steal at I think £800k. And so it proved, both in the Championship and PL. He went on to do well at Charlton and for ROI. As a Captain, I thought he was good.

So you have a certain fondness for a player who drank champagne to celebrate a defeat, but not a happy clappy, insincere captain who holds the club record for number of consecutive appearances. You are joking aren't you?
Your Favourite/Best Town captain - on 18:35 - Aug 8 with 466 views | Whos_blue | The correct answer is of course Mick Mills, but Holland was a great captain at a (mainly) great time for the club. An honourable mention for Chambers too. Had his limitations sure, but I thought he was a good skipper during a difficult time for the club. The dogs abuse he got from some on here was way over the top. I notice he's already racked up 50 appearances for col u. A good pro.

“Cowardly thug”. Sounds like something Morrissey would come up with. Maybe we could write a chant for Morsy is the style of a Smiths song.
