Freeports are the mechanism the Right are promoting to ease the way for Charter Cities - where democracy is suspended and government is run by private companies https://t.co/8vskFktXcg

Ta for the link mrs
You're welcome - please share & spread as wide & far as poss, everyone else too if willing and able - there seems to be little or no awareness of this shocking, invidious scheme amongst the general public - certainly not seen anything in msm.

Looking back, this seems prophetic -
Yeah, it’s received remarkably little attention. Probably because it needs a bit of more in depth reading and can’t all be summed up in one tweet. The potential (proven from other examples) for exploitation, deregulation and corruption sounds horrific. Horrific to most of us that is, but not those who’ll exploit the relaxation of rules for their own gain.
charter cities would be a bad thing. but beyond that i'm not sure that's a great article. the reasoning seems to be that charter cities are a bad things and the tories do bad things so sort of qed. there's nothing there to establish that the tories are pursuing charter cities. it's like finding some nutter on the left who wants to a 100% top rate of tax and saying well that's the sort of thing labour would do.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Whilst we were distracted by the Westminster circus, the clowns have, in plain sight, auctioned off eight bits of the country to become charter cities or freeports as they are euphemistically called.
"0.0.2. The UK government is now formally launching the bidding process for Freeports in England and seeking proposals from bidding coalitions. This Bidding Prospectus is a guide for bidders entering that process. It sets out the government’s ambition for Freeports policy, the government’s core Freeport objectives, what is expected of bidders and what a best-in-class Freeport proposal from them will include. "

again, casually using "freeport" and "charter city" as inter-changeable terms isn't terribly convincing. are you saying that a freeport has all the features discussed in the article you linked on charter cities? no of course not. just eliding two distinct concepts doesn't prove anything, other than that you don't trust the tories.

iThe one will inevitably lead to the other if the Tories remain in power.
If you don't believe that, you must have been living in a cave with no comms to the outside world & your fingers in your ears for the past 12 years.

Freeports to me feel like another race to the bottom idea. Another way for firms to dodge, or at least reduce their tax liabilities. In much the same way places like Connecticut in the US lure firms with very low taxes.
We already have those, they are just called the Channel Islands…

but you have to assess freeports as they exist - essentially offering tax and tariff advantages. they don't include all of the things listed in the original article such as a suspension of employment law or of individual legal rights and benefits. apples aren't oranges, and the assertion that apples will evolve into oranges hasn't been proven.

its a return to Feudal systems where landowners are free to impose their own laws, taxes, etc without the inconvenience of state interference, scary stuff unless you really fancy owning nothing any more.

If you care about anything at all, you have to remove any blinkers you might happen to be wearing & use your grey cells assess what the future is likely to be.
