There have plenty of rubbish players who’ve signed for Ipswich, particularly in recent years. Real turkeys. However, there are some who’ve turned out brilliantly. For example, I give you Mark Venus.

A real makeweight in the Sedgley deal with Wolves. Initial thoughts were what on earth are we taking that load of rubbish with a comedy name on for? What is Burley doing lumbering us with a second rate old bloke of 30? Squad fodder. Talk about getting mugged off by Wolves!

Errrr, six years, 148 appearances, 16 goals, a promotion, a short stint in the PL and a player of the year award, how wrong can you be? It was Wolves that got mugged off.

He was absolutely terrific for us and a far better player than I thought he would be.

There are plenty of others.

I know it's fairly premature in terms of achievement, but Aluko had a few people scratching their heads when he signed. That's not to mention an absolutely stinking debut.

Now on his day he's one of the nicest footballers to watch at the club.

Either I'm a great judge of character or I just give most incoming players the benefit of the doubt, because I'm struggling to think of any more.

I can only assume those scratching their heads over Aluko simply hadn't heard of him and assumed he was a rubbish signing because he was 32yo. In terms of pedigree and longevity in the top two leagues he was the best signing we made last summer.

Donacien. When we let him go out on loan, I was almost didsapointed it wasn’t a permanent.

But then the player who came back was so much more confident and composed. And now he’s arguably the first name on the team sheet for us. Always 7/10 minimum and now also a real threat with the ball at his feet.
