I know we were baying for it last night 08:23 - Sep 14 with 2358 views | Cheltenham_Blue | But I did think the second red was a little harsh. Chaplin going away from goal, if Kilgour hadn't clipped his heels then he would have got around to cover. Not a clear goalscoring opportunity for me, I'd expect Rovers to appeal that. The Thomas sending off though, could see that one coming throughout the second half, looked like he was trying to prove something to Barton.

I know we were baying for it last night on 09:42 - Sep 14 by Whos_blue | Just seen the reply and you've called it spot on. Very little intent, but a foul by the last player and therefore a red. At the pace Chaplin was running, I would have expected him to run through on goal. Harsh, but the right decision. Be interesting to hear Barton's thoughts on it. |

In Phil’s report on post match interviews Barton seems to have suggested Chaplin dived. What lead you to believe Barton had no complaints about both red cards?

I know we were baying for it last night on 10:17 - Sep 14 with 407 views | Radlett_blue | First sending off was an obvious 2nd yellow. Player was totally dumb to do that when on a yellow but I suppose the cynical foul has become embedded in some players brains. The straight red was harsh. Contact was minimal & Chaplin had plenty to do. However, why are players so reluctant to leave the field these days when sent off? I've never seen a red card rescinded. Just shows the lack of respect for referees in general, I suppose - players contest most decisions so again culturally embedded in their brains to contest the decision. I know we were baying for it last night on 09:34 - Sep 14 by Guthrum | He was the "last man", bit of a technical sending off. Don't think the trip was deliberate, either. Somewhat unfortunate for Kilgour. But he did commit a foul and thus stopped Chaplin having a run on goal. |
Law doesn't mention being the last man, but it was an obvious goalscoring opportunity so he had to go, even if the trip was accidental.

Chaplin didn't have any real reason to dive at that point. He was pretty much through for a run on goal (with confidence in his scoring ability high). Diving would have stopped that promising attack* (which the foul did). Getting an opposition player sent off that late in the game when Town were already leading 2 - 0 lends no great advantage to us. In any case, it looked to me like a straightforward accidental trip while Kilgour was maneuvering to stop Chaplin getting away. * Yes, a free kick in an attacking position results, but the opposition have a chance to get players back, form a wall, etc.

I was thinking that that might have been the reasoning behind the overturn, it may have been considered not as obvious a goalscoring opportunity as required. Having said that, experience tells us these hearings are basically pot luck, we've been on the end of some ludicrous rulings in the past. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Think a lot of it hinged on the direction of travel, Kilgour heading toward the goal, Chaplin toward the corner flag at some pace too. Without the contact, Chaplin has to slow down and change direction giving Kilgour time to get into a defensive position. I was chanting "off", with everyone else, but when the ref actually pulled out the red, I admit, I did say "well, fu^k me dead" to the bloke sat next to me. [Post edited 15 Sep 2022 20:55]
