So frustrating we just can't seem to beat the top 6 sides 17:16 - Sep 17 with 7486 viewsChrisd

Disappointing, but I'd have taken a point before the game today. However, since we have found ourselves in L1 over the last few seasons we really do struggle to beat any of the top 6 sides. I wonder what our record is over the last 4 seasons? I'm sure the victories over those top sides you could count on 1 hand as a guess.

It depends on the context. You're suggesting there's something wrong in what we do or that we're just not quite good enough. We were denied wins against top 6 sides THIS SEASON due to poor officiating, not poor play.

If I'm the fastest cyclist in my street but someone let's my tyres down before every race, you can't simply say "Dollers isn't very good," end of discussion.

Context is important. Get some context in your life!

So you’ve been battering me throughout this thread about mentioning sides ‘this season’ because we don’t know yet that they really are a top 6 side because it’s so early in the campaign and I tried to avoid that, but because it suits your argument it’s ok for you to use Saturday’s display as an example? You’re reasoning about this season is fine in that context and I accept your point, but when I was talking about 6 wins from 34 games over the last 3 seasons, that stat isn’t solely down to poor refereeing decisions I’m afraid.

Understanding and reading the original point is important, but insulting the poster about a particular point that hadn’t really been mentioned and then continue to use that same point as the basis of your own argument?! Simply baffling.

I don’t know about you, but I think this discussion has run its course. I’m more than happy to see what unfolds. Let’s pick it up later on in the season and if I’ve been proved wrong and our record against the top 6 improves, which I hope it will, then I’m more than happy to eat my own hat.

The next two matches will give this some more context.if we win or draw them, I wonder if the Plymouth and Portsmouth fans will be saying the same about not beating the top sides , particularly as they drew last Saturday.

I can't just leave it there when you're misrepresenting what I've said. I haven't particularly used Saturday's display as an example - I've used the only examples we have for this season, and in each we've failed to win through poor officiating not poor play.

This is all irrelevant to previous seasons (and I've already agreed with you on those) because we had different teams, and indeed managers, and indeed owners!

"when I was talking about 6 wins from 34 games over the last 3 seasons, that stat isn’t solely down to poor refereeing decisions I’m afraid." - why are you putting up this straw man?! I haven't stated otherwise!

You are posting some right mental gymnastics and straw men to try to bring some sense to your argument. And you've still failed to explain what you think we're doing wrong - the players themselves or how McKenna's instructing them - or if you think we're just not good enough. Explain yourself!

In short - yes, we've struggled to beat top 6 sides in previous seasons. I've not once disagreed with this.
This season there's not enough evidence to show a trend either way. But we have certainly deserved to win those games if not for poor decisions by officials.

So what is your point, if you have one?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

You’ve answered it in your final paragraph. If you go back to my OP post it clearly says it. I’ll save you the bother, I just wanted to know what our record was overall against those top 6 sides. That was all. I think the mental gymnastics happened when things were misinterpreted and then we’ve ended up with all this nonsense. It is what it is, but time to move on now I think.

No. Your OP tries to conflate Saturday's result with previous seasons' inability to beat the top sides, quite clearly. And that's what I had exception to. Nothing's been misinterpreted, that's what you said, people disagreed with it, and you got 9 down arrows for it. You've jumped through all sorts of hoops over the following 4 pages trying to defend it.

I disagree that Saturday - or any of our other games this season against 'top six sides' - bares any relation or analysis to previous seasons.

"I just wanted to know what our record was overall against those top 6 sides. That was all."

Haha, well no, that's not what you posted Mr. Sweetandinnocent! If that's really all you wanted to know this thread would've been 2 or 4 posts long max, not 4 pages! Stop being a tinker!

Flash, to be fair to the other fella - whilst you have a point about officials costing us points... you can't ignore that in both games we should have not left ourselves in the position where 1 bad error by an official costs us the 3 points.

That's not saying we've played badly btw, the complete opposite imo, but in both games we had other chances to put the game to bed before the errors.

a niche perspective

Irrelevant. If you have a winning goal chalked off, or an offside equaliser allowed, then you've been denied a win. People are saying we should beat a top 6 side, not thrash them so that even if the officials make monumental errors we still win anyway.

What's the point in reposting your OP?

The context is it was posted just after we'd failed to beat a top 6 side... then mentions that day's game... then says "we really do struggle to beat any of the top 6 sides."

It is OBVIOUS you are attaching Saturday's game to the previous seasons' inability to beat top 6 sides. You also mention the other times this season (even bringing in Barnsley who are only top 6 as of Saturday) later in the thread.

Stop being disingenuous. You know exactly what you were suggesting and are now backtracking. You won't be responding because you've been caught bang to rights and won't admit it.
