'Our Friends in the North' 16:02 - Sep 22 with 1684 viewsRyorry

Anyone else watching or re-watching this cracking BBC drama series from 1996? (currently being repeated in BBC4 marathons of 3 eps every Wednesday eve).

Superb acting & writing, impressively prophetic re the direction both Tory & Labour parties would go in' & still completely relevant. Plus ca change etc.

You bet. Loved it first time around, and just happened to be channel hopping last week and caught the start of the first episode. Magnificent series, highly relevant even 25 years on, and the start of great things for Strong, McKee, Eccleston and Craig.

Geordies hair though.......

Haha, yes - truly horrible!

Nicky's was a barometer of the times - much improved (positively tidy even) if you stuck it out till 1979 at about 1.30 am!

Great reminder of that one, cheers. Hope they also repeat it at some future point.

The other one I'd really love to see is 'I Claudius' - absolutely outstanding, from 1976. Atm I think you can only get it either as a box set or on YouTube.

Yeah, including not much apparent change in the conduct (ie misconduct) of the Met police 🤬

I was a tad unsure of whether to watch it or not - I remember it being outstanding and was worried that it wouldn’t actually be what I remember (not sure if that makes sense). But will definitely watch it again.

Can understand that, feel similarly about 'I Claudius' - it's a risk if you're re-watching for the first time in decades.

Fwiw, I found the opener of OFITN far less engaging on the rewatch than subsequent episodes, possibly because it focussed less on the politcs & more on the friendships & social life, so if you remember that side of things, it could be worth going straight to the second episode, or at least only skimming the first one?

Thanks - think I’ll watch all of it. BBC4 are showing more shows from the 80s/90s - I’ve never watched ‘The Singing Detective’ so will catch that as well.

TSD was superb & well worth a watch, tho I preferred the other Dennis Potter the Beeb did in that era - 'Pennies from Heaven', starring Bob Hoskins.

Oh yes! The final scene in the final episode! I also enjoyed ‘ This Life’ around that time. The mid 90’s were, for me, a great time all round!

I tend to watch Our Friends in the North once a year - it's brilliant and still remains fresh to me - plus I am in love with Gina McKee, and Geordie in a slightly light on my loafers way.

I tried to watch King of the Ghetto the other week as I found it on youtube but the picture was so bad I gave up, shame, I liked that.

I do have a bit of a hankering for things back in the day, I think that's because I am now officially old. There are two rare DVD's that I really miss, I don't think they are available through any kind of streaming - Johnny Jarvis and Prospects.

I lent them to Dalai Farmer and then the fool died, I managed to get Prospects back but then lent it to someone else and have forgotten who it was. I was going to ask DF's dad if he had found Johnny Jarvis but I thought it might be a bit inappropriate and at the time he was still in a state of shock at Dalais porn collection that he uncovered. He's dead as well now the poor old boy.

I'm so busy at the moment that my brain is currently smashed to pieces. Because of this I can only watch things that I have already seen so don't need to concentrate*****. I watched a bit of Auf Weiddesen (sp) Pet last night.

****I can watch the current Doc Martin but that's about it
