I would encourage anybody who has not been tested, to do so!

The NHS don’t undertake regular screening with PSA tests as they claim the tests produce too many false positives leading to unnecessary procedures. They also produce too many false negatives. So don’t sound particularly reliable.

I don’t know if that’s sound advice though and whether it’s motivated by funding/lack of capacity or genuine (I’ve no reason to doubt the NHS line on it).

Just throwing it into the discussion, in case anyone knows otherwise (not that there are many medics on here!).

Edited for accuracy.

I had a PSA test every year as part of my annual check up. Last year the PSA level was raised, and I was referred to a Urology specialist . I had a scan and a biopsi and was diagnosed with Prostrate Cancer. Had surgery to remove the prostrate. So I urge all males to have a PSA test.

Indeed. We had Chris from CHAPS on Life's a Pitch a few years back. He told me that the last time they'd done tests at Portman Road, they had, figures off he top of my head and may be one or two out either way, 250 men attend, 17 test results required them following them up and of those four had prostate cancer which was caught earlier than it otherwise would have been.

That's not exactly true but i do know what ypu mean. The PSA test measures an antigen in the blood. I was given a test as I had a very slightly enlarged prostate. My reading was over 5 which is regarded as the safe limit. I then had a scan. My readings have gone up twice but I don't have cancer but I am now being checked with a psa test yearly so I feel grateful for that. The chances of cancer after a high reading is roughly 25% . A friend of mine had a psa check just for a well man check and his reading was high. It turned out he had the early stages of prostate cancer. 20 sessions of radiotherapy later he was cancer free. The psa test saved his life .

Glad you got sorted. You must've had the cancer inside the prostate I assume. On the outside they can get rid of it a lot easier my urologist told me. My last test read 7.6 so they only want to see me once a year. Apparently the reading can go into the 100's and still be just enlarged and not cancer.

I went along to the one at PR, cost a fiver I think, results emailed to you, based in Dedham I think? Felt worthwhile going along at 55 as I was then, and being in the SBR suite gave it a good feeling.

Ah yes, I misrepresented slightly. They don’t “not recommend” at all, but they also do not recommend routine screening. They have an “informed choice” policy. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/prostate-cancer/psa-testing/

I didn’t intend to rubbish it, so will modify my post. If it’s useful, it begs the question why they don’t have routine screening.

Their view is, I suspect, that it's generally a very slow-progressing cancer that will kill you at an advanced age if you've survived everything else.

Not saying that's morally right.
