Nuclear war and/or WW3 09:43 - Oct 13 with 2932 viewsThisIsMyUsername

How close do we reckon? Lots of stories in the last couple of days about Russia saying Ukraine joining NATO would 'guarantee' WW3, and other officials saying that Russia using a nuke in Ukraine would lead to a 'physical' response by NATO.

Just wondering as I've currently voted on my poll that ITFC will reach the Prem before WW3 and I want to know if I should change it.

In all seriousness I wasn't alive during the Cuban Missile Crisis and I am interested how similar things are at the moment and how much genuine risk there is.

Otherwise how do people see the war in Ukraine ending? Is it only when Putin gets assassinated by his own team?

I think we're all holding out for an internal job aren't we? Although it seems there are those worse than Putin in positions of influence in Russia, so that could be a case of BCWYWF (not that I'm in any way, shape or form defending that a-hole Putin).

An expert was saying there's no point replacing Putin under the current system, you'd just have another dictator

What you need is a system change and it's not like the Russians haven't done it before, the Communists got rid of their monarchy.

I suppose Putin has established systems of control over the years to try and prevent another coup, against him as the modern Tsar

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Thanks for all the interesting responses. I've caught up on the thread and I'm sufficiently reassured that we probably aren't on the brink, as well as that we might get to see ITFC on MOTD again yet.

I dont think Ukraine will be the catalyst for WW3 unless things seriously escalate.

More likely the spark to light it will be when China invade Taiwan.

I don't think China invading Taiwan will trigger anything.
It's nowhere near USA or Europe.
USA and Europe don't have any skin in the game to be bothered with it.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Interestingly and I don't know how true it is, it was just a theory

Someone was arguing Russia always massively talks up it's Nuclear quantities.

They were arguing Russia only really has tactical Nukes it could use successfully in an exchange

In the 70's and 80's, the US switched it's strategy from MAD to actually being able to win a 'small' Nuclear war with Russia

They argument was the complexities of maintaining a large fleet of active Nukes is expensive and impractical, Russia talked up their numbers but realistically have far fewer than they claim and can only really use the tactical Nukes, the rest would be unusable in World War 3 and disabled before they could do any damage.

Of course any war featuring Nukes is a terrifying prospect and something the World never wants to see, the feeling is the more Putin keeps threatening the use of them, the less threatening it becomes

It does all seem a bit 'Look at me. Please. I'm REALLY serious. You should give me what I want or else. Swear down.' in the vague hope that enough bluster will actually work and get him what he wants.
