Help!!! .. Braces 11:08 - Oct 24 with 1144 viewsurbanblue

My 15 year old daughter had braces fitted today and she's going psycho about the pain she's in. It's evening here.

Is she being a drama queen or is this normal?

When my son had them he was also in a lot of pain. Then when he had them tightened up every few months, it would be painful again for a couple of days. He couldn’t chew anything initially it was so painful, so he was on the soup!

They are pretty painful at first but shouldn’t be anything overly bad. She should get used to it in a few days, but you might have to listen to her complaining for now.

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

They are very painful, and will be when you get them tightened.

When I had them it was just paracetamol and grin and bear it - but you would have a paracetamol at 10pm, go to bed and then wake up in pain 3.5 hours later once it wore off - lasts for 3-4 days

Complaining? Try tears and screaming at me to go away from the bedroom when I ask if there's anything I can do to help ...

That does seem unusually bad.

Load her up on painkillers and ice cream until the pain is more manageable. If still that bad in a couple of days get back into the orthodontists and see can they do anything to help.

It’s crap and sore but it really shouldn’t be that bad.

She's had paracetamol and I suggested nurafen as well but was told to go away in no uncertain terms.

I'm a single Dad and she's been ringing her Mum as if I'm the one inflicting the pain.

What a wonderful evening this is ...

I'm not a pharmacist ...

I was told that mixing paracetamol (4 hourly cycle) and ibuprofen 2 hour later (4 hour cycle) meant that you flattened the curve of overall pain relief.

Obviously don't do this just on my comment but mayb worth looking up more qualified comment.

Her Mum's a nurse and I've always used both when in a lot of pain. She's refusing the ibuprofen at the moment. Not sure why.

Anyway, she's calmed down now chatting to her friends on the phone. Hopefully drama over for a while anyway.

Not confident of a good nights sleep to be honest

Ibuprofen the cheaper option than Nurofen but yes, those two can be taken together. Just ensure you manage the overall dose of each. If you can eek out the time between them (or hopefully manage 8 hours overnight without any) then it should work.

I think it is just going to be a case of sucking it up, maybe doesn't like look of them etc as well and is lashing out a bit? Just keep her dosed up on the mild painkillers and wait for it pass!

It's trendy now don't you know Joe. They are a cool lavender colour. Her and her Mum were keen although i didn't even think she particularly needed them.

Yep sure it will pass. She's already wangled tomorrow off school which maybe a case of job done I guess

My son was in a lot of pain for the first two days. And now some minor discomfort when he gets them tightened. It’s a long process
