The issue I have replacing the HoL with a second elected chamber is that it will merely produce a shadow House of Commons, with all the same party political bollox we currently have in that place. I can't think of any effective way of excluding that party alignment and ensuring it becomes some sort of neutral scrutiny forum.

Can't quite see what the point of having it at all would be, really. Especially if it still (post 1911) has no actual power to assert influence upon legislation in the face of government insistence. Might as well go unicameral.

Agree with this. If we are to have a second chamber, I would prefer it to be indirectly elected like the Bundesrat in Germany or Senate in the Netherlands, whose members are elected by councillors. I am also concerned that Starmer will push for a Senate elected by PR as a way of welching out of changing the electoral system for the House of Commons.

Personally I would prefer a unicameral parliament — the scrutiny and revisional powers of the Lords could simply be transferred to the Select Committees, which is how some unicameral parliaments work. However, alongside a unicameral national parliament, I would like to see a properly federal UK with an English parliament (which could sit in the Lords chamber) and the UK parliament's remit reduced to national-level stuff like foreign affairs, defence etc.

That is a fear I had not thought of. I think a degree of proportionality, or a single transferable vote system should be in place for the first chamber, regardless of what happens with the second one.

Around ten years seems to be more than long enough for one party to remain in power. If truth be known the Tories wouldn’t be in power now if, at the last two election, there had been a credible alternative.

We have an real alternative now but would like to hear how Labour would being dealing differently with our current woes. How would they find the funds to give Nurses, fireman, refuse collectors et al a decent pay rise?

A Labour government after the next election is not a given it has to be worked for.

When was the last time we had a labour government? because Blair/Brown were Tory light. If we voted for Keir do you think the country would be better overnight?

It might not actually be better but it would certainly feel a whole better for a while...

The only thing that would change overnight would to the expectation of those who elected them to office. They will face disappointment.

Increased government expenditure without increase taxation is a pipe dream.

I’d get rid of the HoL tomorrow. An unelected and in many cases unqualified group of people deciding on stuff in this country? Never agreed with it and never will.

Those people even objected and refused to share a restaurant with members of the HoC because theirs is far better. Some of them turn up, claim their expenses, have a lovely lunch and tootle home.

Bye.

See monarchy.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Listen to this we are all doomed unless we get new parties to govern.

If Charles Chetwynd-Talbot, 22nd Earl of Shrewsbury (his direct ancestor was created the first earl six hundred years ago this year) thinks he has something to contribute, then he can stand for election to an upper chamber chosen by the electorate.
