...if we sang a song for more than 5 seconds. It's so weird - you hear a song start and it's LOUD, and 6 words later it stops, just as other people are thinking about joining in...

I really appreciate everything that you try to do, and the motives behind it.
Looking at other Ultras groups in the UK and abroad, it almost feels as if you guys need to be able to impose yourselves more upon the support, although this would definitely need buy-in from those around you, as well as from the club, I would imagine?
Would some sort of 'capo'-based setup work better? With a member of BA essentially leading the hardcore support, and working with the drummer to try and create cohesion in what's sung, and trying to stop chants from petering out after a few seconds?
We do have a capo that leads most of the songs, but it’s hard for everyone else to hear him where we’re located, plus again, a lot of folk just don’t join in.
We did ask the club to let us install a little capo stand at the front of the section so he could be a bit higher so more visible, but they won’t go for it.

It's a real shame that the club seems so disinterested in giving you guys any form of actual support, especially given the amount of noise that comes from both the players and management about the importance of creating an atmosphere at games.
Even if the club seemingly can't be a*sed, you've got my support and that of a great number of other fans.

When they booted me out at the Pompey game because of standing on my seat (which I wasn't) they said they'd build a capo stand. A week later when I chased them about it, they said they couldn't now, because it would stop wheelchair access, despite us showing them a design where the wheelchair could be parked underneath...
We then asked for a megaphone. Immediately batted away because it was a prohibited item. Sent a screenshot of the prohibited items as listed on the club website where there is no mention of a megaphone being prohibited. They then go oh, ok, you can use one; day comes when we want to use it, they say actually you can't because 'if the PA system malfunctions we have designated stewards with a megaphone and we don't want the fans to get confused'...
But as Blue_Order says, there's not a lot of point. It's an absolute wasteland in that section...

I think part of the problem is that thinking of "blue action, it's over to you". No it isn't. They are doing their bit, it's the rest of the ground that needs to up it's game. There are only a handful of people in every other section of the ground that ever try to get things going, but as the OP says, it runs out of steam before everyone has caught on. Wasn't there yesterday so can't comment on the specifics, but that has been my experience of Portman Road for years.
I've always thought it would be good if in every stand (or even breaking it down further in to areas) there was an area of seating that was sort of highlighted as a singing/chanting area, or something to that effect. Basically I no longer have a season ticket, but try to get to around 5-10 games a season, and as a result will end up sitting all around the ground during the season. I am always keen to get involved with a chant, but won't if no one around me is singing, and I think a lot of people fall in to this category. I think if spread throughout the ground there were little pockets of seating that people had chosen to sit in because they like to get involved with the singing (and also those that have no interest in singing chose to avoid), then chants would catch on far more effectively, and even those that aren't in the little pockets of singing fans might get drawn in as well.

That really is appalling from the club - it seems that for all their outward attitude of 'let's create one hell of an atmosphere', the reality is that they're actively trying to make things as difficult as possible for Blue Action.
I can't imagine for one second that fans would struggle to tell the difference between a fan leading some chants through a megaphone, and a steward in hi-viz using a megaphone to request that everyone in the NSL calmly makes their way onto the pitch and awaits further instructions.

ive always liked singing the blues, adapted that could go on and on.
problem is, and its happened at away games, the more the join in the faster it gets sung.
ill never understand town fans that sing songs fast. same a EEJB, the pace they race off at is cray
In a similar vein, I sit in Magnus block M - there are some chants that involve clapping along with the drum, but for some reason the people around me clap faster and faster and faster, and it's impossible not to get dragged along with it. That's not how it goes, listen to the drum ffs!
Obviously, there is the problem that sound takes time to travel across the ground, so its hard to actually sync up with a drum from the other side of the ground unless everyone is clapping, and you just have to clap/sing with the person next to you.
