Office sweepstake - Zahawi 12:08 - Jan 23 with 2475 viewsHARRY10

I have drawn 4pm, as the time he will announce he is 'stepping down'

From elsewhere

"I had my shares in YouGov stashed in an offshore company in my dad's name, and so I avoided paying tax on them when the shares were sold for £27 million in 2018.

And then I didn't declare it when required to do so, both as an MP and a minister.

I've now been rumbled by HMRC and have been forced to pay a penalty of millions of pounds for tax avoidance."

But I am innocent of any wrongdoing

Sunak is already putting in the groundwork:

"No 10 says Sunak was not aware of Zahawi paying penalty to HMRC when he defended him in Commons last week"

Urgent question in commons this afternoon too.

I'd say by 3pm tomorrow.

""No 10 says Sunak was not aware of Zahawi paying penalty to HMRC when he defended him in Commons last week"

The two names there both recently holding the office of Chancellor of the Exchequer, it's hard to believe this is actual real-life UK politics & not some Private Eye spoof.

The tories trying to shrug off this level of ingrained corruption & chaos simply because they've made it such a frequent & therefore 'routine' occurrence is beyond shocking. Yet still some people say, bizarrely, they'll vote for them again.

Interesting comment from Rev Richard Coles on Twitter (Mrs C follows him)

‘I don’t know the details of Mr Zahawi’s tax situation, and it may be perfectly OK, but it puzzles me that someone could have risen so high - and served as Chancellor - without the appointment process having raised any issues.’

I think your last paragraph answers his question just as it answers the question as to whether Sunak knew about Zahawi. Of course he did, but to them it’s normal. Just as giving a peerage to a Russian who slipped a few roubles into a few pockets is normal. Nothing to see here.

A little bit of magic on the good ole tax return is nothing more than a good laugh and drinks all round at the club for these people. The max they pay is estimated to be what, 10%?

Edit - interesting Guardian article on the Tory sewer.

"No 10 says Sunak was not aware of Zahawi paying penalty to HMRC when he defended him in Commons last week"

Last summer, news reports emerged about Zahawi’s financial affairs, including an HMRC look at his taxes. At the time, Zahawi described such reports as “smears”.

Whereas Zahawi then instructs his lawyers (Osborne Clark) to threaten the investgator (into his tax avoidance). Odd that Zahawi can afford a top lawyer but not a competent accountant, who might have noticed the 'careless' way Zahawi had supposedly overlooked the £3.7m tax liability

It is revealed in the media (15th Jan) that Zahawi had paid the overdue tax and also paid a fine and interest. Yet supposedly no one told Sunak, and so he was allowed to stand at the dispatch box and claim 'he was not aware'.

It smacks of the Tory Party riven in two whereby neither side wants to be seen to gain an advantage over the other, so all many of corruption, malfeasance and even sexual offence are ignored lest it triggers an all out war.

A timeline of the invrestigation - worth a read as it does rather clarify things

If he's that bloody "careless", he's not competent to hold office.
