Lobbying firms act as a conduit for their clients - so you do not have to be too bright to know where the money orginated from - and the example you give is rather misleading, to put it mildly "On 15 December 2015, when the firm gave money to the four Conservative MPs, it had received $100,000 from Gazprombank for lobbying work done that quarter." note the word lobbying, not legal .............. lobbying work |
Yes, the legal firm might have received money from Gazprom, at a time when dealings with Russia were legal, but there is no suggestion in the article that this money was given to the MPs, or the MPs were lobbied about Gazprom, and I suppose even if this had been the case, dealings by MPs with Russian firms were not so far as I am aware illegal at that time. So, without further information, I would accept what the MOD said. "Squire Patton Boggs are an international law firm with hundreds of clients operating in over 40 countries. There is nothing odd about them hosting an event for MPs and any suggestion this equates to accepting Gazprom money is simply misleading." [Post edited 29 Jan 2023 19:45]

So the money came from that lobbying ompany ? To what purpose ? Odd that having received money from gazprom it should decide to pay out £40,000 out of its own money. Why did each MP receive £10,000 supposedly to host a party ? Monies paid out to what would be pro brexiters on 15 December 2015 — just one day after the House of Lords approved the European Union Referendum Act Though not illegal this company "was lobbying the State Department and Senate to lift US Treasury Department sanctions imposed in July 2014 against Russia over its invasion and occupation of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea. Gazprombank had been added to a list of Russian companies barred from debt financing with US institutions." But OK for certain Tory MPs, it would seem

We need to hear more about Labour’s strengths, so that the electorate can be won over. Going to be more of a slog than some believe. |
People have such short memories though, right now he is doing what he needs to, just keep reinforcing what everyone already thinks about the tories and hammering it home. Not much point to talk about policy now when we are still over 12 months from a GE. That stuff will ramp up towards the end of the year.
