Sheff Wed didn’t look particularly impressive for a side that were top… 07:08 - Feb 12 with 2364 viewsITFC_Forever

… once we got our act together.

Their back three looked vulnerable on every attack, hard to believe they have kept so many clean sheets. Flint in for McGuinness looks a downgrade (Flint’s best days are long gone), Iorfa is the same as he was at ITFC and panics when someone runs at him and Famewo was no better.

We needed to and should have won the game, scoring the penalty, the ref sending someone off and not giving away two poor goals would have helped.

It’s a better result for SWFC and it’s yet another game we haven’t won. It’s all very well saying we need to go on a run, and there’s xx games left…. We need to pull our fingers out and actually do something or there’s no chance of top two and we could even be looking over our shoulders at seventh… something that was unthinkable not long ago.

We’ve got three very tough away games in March / early April - Bolton, Barnsley and Derby. We need to win the “easy” games as well, and take a decent haul of points from those three away games as well.

That says more about our own shortcomings than anything else. We can’t keep saying we should’ve won that game, that one and that one. The fact we seem consistently coming up short is more a concern. I was looking at our record yesterday against the top 6 and I’ll throw Wycombe into the mix too, that’s now 1 win (Derby at home) from 8 games. For a team that I keep getting told has the best squad in the league that’s just not good enough. On reflection, the fact is we still seem to have the same problems as last season, we draw too many games and don’t win often enough. Just hope we have enough to get through the Play Offs. A stat on Twitter last night, over the last 5 games where we’ve played in front of crowds over 29k at PR, we’ve not won any. Our recent history shows, we just don’t seem very good at coping and using the pressure to our advantage.

The thing they did have that we lack, is being clinical. Though they went two up, they didn't look good for it. They were pretty poor themselves, though with more fight and energy than us, but they took the first two chances we gifted them well.

Their first was a quality goal. We should have stood on the ball to stop the quick free kick but it was a perfect cross, perfect run and perfect header.

This. In the second half we tried to take a quick free kick and Smith just blocked it. No yellow card, no talking to from the ref, no repercussions. We need to be more streetwise.

My view of them after yesterday is they are nothing more than a very physically strong bunch of thugs. Most were built like brick outhouses. Typical league one tbh. They won’t last long in the championship that’s for sure. By contrast ( bar the defence) we are a very good championship side who, should we ever get there, will do very well I think .

It's all about grinding out results, week after week. They've been better than us at that which is why we're playing catch up. A draw with Sheff Wed isn't a problem in itself, it's draws with Cambridge, Lincoln, Fleetwood, Cheltenham, etc. that's killing us.

By some way Sheff Weds' most common result is a 1 - 0 win (27.6% of all games, 44.4% of wins). The very epitome of grinding out results, despite their couple of big scores at home against the bottom teams.

Absolutely it's the draws against the middling teams which are hurting us.

Our 2 goals were a spectacular inch perfect free kick and a deflected free kick.

According to some on this forum, the second half was the best we’ve played this season.

Whilst playing the best we’ve played this season we couldn’t break them down from open play.

Yet Wednesday didn’t look very good and we can’t see how they’ve let in so few goals.

Either delusion is high or logic is lacking.

....and that's the rub, we are by far the better "footballing" team but for some unknown reason we seem able to c0ck it up week after week.

Sheff Wed are very good at defending and snatching the odd goal to win games. That's their schtick.

Ours is keeping hold of the ball, attacking and being decent from set pieces, but weak at the back.

We score lots, they concede few. Currently they are winning the battle of the philosophies, but it doesn't come down to much more than that.

“Sheff Weds didn’t look particularly impressive”

After Chaplin’s poor penalty gifted the Owls fans and players the momentum.. they absolute blew us away for 35mins, probably the best we’ve see from an away team at PR for some time.

They were physically bossing us (the ref admittedly gave them a lot of leeway to do this) but some of their passing and interplay was excellent. They have the best players in the league in half their positions. Yes we switched off for their first, but in the individual skill after that for the cross and header were brilliant. The dominance and finish of the second goal literally blew us away.

To come back from that, make the shape change, and then dominate them for most of the second half was a positive. But we then came up against the strength of their defence. That had been on a run of clean sheets.

It’s very disappointing not to win the big game, and we now need to get some wins ASAP. But to suggest Weds weren’t strong I can’t agree with.

Footballers are humans, all humans will suffer from nerves etc, it's why Sir Alex called it 'squeaky bum time'.
That's why there will be more twists and turns before this season ends.

I was actually disappointed with Wednesday I didn't think they looked anything special. Windass, OK great cross for the goal, but as a goal scoring threat he never looked anything special (based on that game).

But I did think their fans were great. The team had basically let a 2 goal lead slip but they were still singing, trying to help the team. I'm sure if we had let a 2 goal lead slip Towns fans would have been moaning and shouting ffs/lump it every time Town tap it around at the back

I thought they were a good team, with Bannan pulling the strings when they had possession.

It was Bannan who took the quick free kick which led to the first, who played the ball into the box for the second, and who played to free kick to an unmarked Flynn near the end which nearly led to a goal

He is not someone who dwells on the ball, and is always looking to play a clever, quick ball.

Sadly, we don't have anyone like him.

We only really got going against them after the break, but that only lasted for about 25 minutes because after the first substitution they came back into the game.

Of course, you could say that they were not better than us on day, but you can see from the way they played that they will not have much trouble against lesser teams than us.

Interesting that they’re another good team in good form that we’ve played and it’s decided afterwards that they’re actually not that good after all. Maybe people should admit we’re actually a pretty good team ourselves when we get going properly rather than throw their toys out the pram and cry about how bad we are every week?

Obviously we’ve put ourselves in a situation where to finish top 2 requires a near-spotless run because there have been too many games where we’ve not taken full advantage of playing well and ended up throwing points away (and for transparency I’m not confident we’ll be successful on that) but we’re not playing badly enough or losing enough to drop out of the top 6 which seems to be the new hyperbolic panic.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
