Lots of blame to go around from culture to austerity. Casey accepts the findings... except for the bit that says these problems are institutional.

A bigot, domestic abuser and a rapist walk into a pub. Barman says 'what can I get you officer?'

“The more Met's top brass fixate on wokeness, the more bigoted its officers become”

Some hilarious mental gymnastics from the Mail - great stuff.

They should probably take a good hard look at themselves given that they were one of the main driver in the 'justice for Stephen Lawrence' campaign in that case.

However, I'd argue that austerity cuts did not help. Pressure and lower morale is going to cause the better officers to leave (much as currently in teaching and the NHS). Pressure on senior personnel-time reducing oversight. Lack of money to institute better practices and recruitment.

None of this excuses or negates the institutional failings (and crimes), but it will contribute to making them worse.

There was an excellent, lengthy contribution to the Nicky Campbell phone-in yesterday on R5l, from a retired Met officer.

Basically he said that changes to pensions arrangements had resulted in whole tranches ("hand over fist" he said) of excellent, experienced, mature officers handing in their resignatons, in quite a short space of time, to retire early.

Not only have the Met by definition not been able to replace those with others of the same experience & maturity, but the scale of the 'uplift' consequently required means they've had to lower entry standards to take in many who would previously have been considered insufficient in calibre.

I think the numerous examples of bullying, harassment etc demonstrate that policing attracts a certain type of person who gets a kick out of power far too often

Not always, plenty of genuine officers but still a certain personality type is v attracted to that role

Trouble is, the 'genuine officers' don't seem to be particularly willing to challenge the behaviour of the wrong 'uns.

Maybe those excellent experienced mature officers were or are part of the problem.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Home secretaries used to resign over this kind of shambles - this 'government' will probably welcome it as a distraction

Maybe a proportion of them were, but not the whole lot.

One simple question Guthers - double the funding of the police tomorrow and you think that any of the cases I highlighted don't happen?

Do the 6 or so officers who watched Simon Harwood attack Ian Thomlinson suddenly decide to intervene? Do they now report what he did (as any honest officer would) ?

Don't see it myself. Lack of funding will of course impact morale, but again, low morale in the NHS hasn't turned individuals into wronguns...

It's not a case of sudden change now. The erosion through cuts has been going on for many years. This is an ingrained problem which has evolved to the current state.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
