Hayfever season. It's started. Tips please. 09:44 - May 19 with 5100 viewsThisIsMyUsername

It's that time of year again. The last couple of days have been miserable and we're nowhere near peak hayfever time yet. I'm currently walking around with tissue paper stuffed up my nose. I give it another month before the constantly itchy and runny eyes starts.

I try it all every year. Hayfever tablets, often taken twice daily rather than the recommended once. Changing my clothes. Washing my face/facial hair.

Any tips or hacks?

Is it a case of trying different types of medications until finding the one that actually does its job?

Move. I used to get it bad in Suffolk, but haven’t had as much as a sniffle since moving to Wales. Granted, it’s a bit of an extreme cure!

Fexofenadine 120mg. Prescription only until last year but now available in pharmacies and large supermarkets. It’s the only thing that works for me.

It took over seventy years to start to suffer with hay fever. I use Optlcron eye drops and also sometimes Becodefense spray. Must admit mine isn't too severe.

Update. Absolute game changer since I posted this. I've started taking the fexofenadine every morning, plus the nasal spray in the morning and before bed to take the edge off over night, and symptoms are 95% improved. Haven't needed the eyedrops at all.

I think it's probably mainly the regular fexofenadine which has made the big difference. The pack I bought was the cheap option from Savers. Definitely worth trying if you haven't.

I'm off to Botswana on Friday so will see whether the African pollen gets through the defences.

I find a full gimp outfit and gas mask does wonders for me

Nothing to do with hayfever though

I'd add "wipe down your computer or laptop screen regularly" - they attract a lot of dust etc., and I noticed that my most frequent trigger for an asthma attack was spending 1hr+ on my laptop.

That's a good idea. Getting rid of dust is a good tip in general. I definitely need to dust my environment much more regularly.

NeilMed do a simple squeaky plastic bottle which squirts salty water up your nose. Very low tech but for me the results were dramatic. £9.99 from any pharmacy.

Beconase or the Boots branded version of it. Deals with symptoms straight away and after a couple of days you don't even know you've got hayfever.

I spent years using various different tablets and spending most of the day feeling drowsy and still having symptoms but the nasal spray is perfect.

Just to bump this thread, I've started using Beconase 8 in 1 nasal spray, and holy flub has it made a difference.

We'll see how it goes for the next month, but so far it's been a revelation. Is it perfect? No. Has it dramatically improved things? Yes.

If you've got nothing else handy, a used & still wet teabag gives great relief for itchy eyes!

I am in fact a clever panda, not many people on here know that.
