Statistical comparison with last Championship season 20:21 - Jun 1 with 26854 viewsNthsuffolkblue

Just been looking at who replaces who if I make the comparison with last time we were in the Championship.

Many of the opposition are the same sides so need no replacement. However, 8 do. I have roughly gone with the most recent promoted replacing the longest ago relegated but not been especially careful to check on this.

I make it:

Plymouth replace Derby
Cardiff replace Bolton
Huddersfield replace Wigan
Watford replace Reading
Coventry replace Forest
Sunderland replace Brentford
Southampton replace Villa
Leicester replace Sheff Utd

Of course the comparison will be with a season in which we got a miserable 31 pts, GF 36, GD -41.

We will need something like 14 more points to stay up, +44 (Edited from +29 - see below) for the play offs and +60 to be talking automatic. I am looking forward to the comparison anyway.

Matchday Eve bump for a change

Going into our 3rd game of the week (finally) at home after 2 hard fought away wins. What I found most pleasing was our opposition in both games couldn't have been more different, and we adapted our defensive tactics to nullify both teams (I don't think Sheffield Wednesday actually had a shot on target all game)

To cope with Wednesday, our defence dealt with all the direct balls in to their target men, our midfield won the second balls or pressured theirs into mistakes, and once we had the ball we kept possession well.

Against Southampton, we were up against a team who play out from the back and try to pass teams to death, so our front men worked their socks off not allowing their defenders time on the ball (rewarded by Omari's excellent goal), and if we didn't manage to win the ball back high up the pitch, we dropped men behind the ball, defended compact and narrow, and saved energy by allowing Southampton to pass the ball around in areas where they couldn't hurt us. We then looked to force them wide and win the ball back in those areas in order to launch quick counter attacks with Southampton leaving space in behind after passing their way up the pitch. 2 completely different tactical set-ups, but 2 identical 1-0 results

Our attacking players not firing on all cylinders in front of goal this week - few chances in both games you'd normally expect the players they fell to to put away; might be a consequence of being a bit more defensive minded when in possession after the goals we shipped against Leeds / Cardiff, but still creating enough chances to think there will be a game very soon where we win far more comfortably.

Current projected totals: 118 Points, 85 Goals - COYB

Not much to say about tonight's performance...probably our most comfortable game so far both on and off the ball; clearly done some work on how to stop shipping goals at home by getting players behind the ball if we don't win it back quickly higher up the pitch, and excellent movement off the ball when in possession enabling us to break the lines and pass our way up the pitch. Definitely think there's more to come too; so many players with potential improvement in them, which is only going to improve the team further.

Rotherham on TV Friday week! (just in case anyone reading this morning had a few yesterday and buys their train tickets in panic)

Just under a quarter of the way through the season, so as it's the international break a few stats:

Comparison with our last Championship season after the same number of games (still one place above Preston!)

23 Ipswich Town 11 0 5 1 (5 7) 0 1 4 (3 9) -8 6
24 Preston North End 11 1 2 2 (9 10) 0 1 5 (5 14) -10 6

1 Leicester City 11 5 0 1 (10 3) 5 0 0 (13 3) +17 30
2 Ipswich Town 11 5 0 1 (19 11) 4 1 0 (6 2) +12 28

So as well as the Pd 11; PTS +20; GD +20; GF +15 calculated by Nthsuffolkblue which factors in the opposition, we are also Pd 11; PTS +22; GD +20; GF +17 if you just consider the number of games.

For those who would like a comparison with other teams in other seasons, other than Leicester this season, Sheffield United in 05/06 are the only team to have racked up more points (30, level with Leicester) after 11 games.

(Full table here: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/championship/saisonstarts/wettbewerb/GB2 )

Just to put into perspective how good a start we've had to the season, the League One Table after 11 games last season:

1 Plymouth Argyle 11 5 0 0 (8 1) 3 1 2 (11 11) +7 25
2 Ipswich Town 11 3 2 0 (11 5) 4 1 1 (11 5) +12 24

Despite going up a division, we are we are also Pd 11; PTS +4; GD 0; GF +3 on where we were at this stage last year.

And finally, for those who like to track it, yes, we're back on target...projected totals are now 117 Points, 105 Goals

Matchday bump for a change

Excellent win midweek - soaked up the early pressure, got the goal, and pretty much in control and comfortable until our substitutions disrupted our rhythm a bit more than usual but still dug in to see the game out.

Random stats of the day...we have conceded the fewest goals away from home in the football league this season (2, level with Arsenal but we have played 3 more games) and other than Wrexham (who have played 3 more games) scored the most home goals.

Just over a third of the way through the season, another international break, so an update on the few stats I provided in an earlier post:

Comparison with our last Championship season after the same number of games - big contrast from being rock bottom and 5 points adrift

23 Hull 16 2 2 4 (7 9) 2 1 5 (6 12) -8 15
24 Ipswich Town 16 0 6 2 (6 10) 1 1 6 (6 16) -14 10

1 Leicester City 16 6 0 2 (11 4) 7 0 1 (18 6) +19 39
2 Ipswich Town 16 7 0 1 (25 15) 5 3 0 (11 6) +15 39

So as well as the Pd 16; PTS +28; GD +25; GF +23 calculated by Nthsuffolkblue which factors in the opposition, we are also slightly better off, Pd 16; PTS +29; GD +29; GF +24 if you just consider the number of games.

For those who would like to compare with other teams in other seasons, other than Leicester this season, we have had the best start to a Championship season by any team in the past 20 seasons after 16 games.

(Full table here: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/championship/saisonstarts/wettbewerb/GB2 )

Just to put into perspective how good a start we've had to the season, the League One Table after 16 games last season:

1 Plymouth Argyle 16 8 0 0 (15 3) 4 2 2 (17 14) +15 38
2 Ipswich Town 16 5 2 1 (15 6) 6 1 1 (16 8) +17 36

Going up a division, we are also Pd 16; PTS +3; GD -2; GF +5 on where we were at this stage last year; more points and goals scored, but have conceded 7 more goals.

And finally, for those who like to track it, yes, we're on target...projected totals are now 112 Points, 104 Goals.

Bad day at the office indeed; we've been riding our luck for a while with our ability to outscore the opposition, so hopefully a little bit of a wake-up call that if we keep conceding early (or soft) goals in games we're not always going to manage that. West Brom have been very strong at home so far this season and did a good job limiting us to very few chances, but we didn't help ourselves yesterday with a lack of our usual composure in the final third.

Positive to take is that the only teams to have beaten us this season have the best defences in the league (apart from Leicester who have only conceded 10 goals all season), so hopefully back in the goals again vs. Millwall.

Projected totals are now 106 Points, 97 Goals.
