Another drop from Bairstow.....sigh. (n/t) on 12:38 - Jun 18 by Ryorry | The way Rooot & Robinson were going though, they were getting boundaries in the bag at a rate of knots as free hits. Can see the logic of the decision, but should have waited to at least get past 400 imho, anything less was too much of a gamble. I wonder how big a part of decisions like that, pre-determination is in Stokes' mind? The gut instinct of most people I think in that freescoring situation would be to keep making hay while the sun shines & if a wicket goes, OK, then declare. Is Stokes allowing flexibility in his thinking as games develop to adapt to situations, or is he sticking too much to pre-determined strategies? (I don't know the answer btw!). Anyway - WICKET Khawaja b Robinson 141 (Aus 372-7) |
I honestly think that wickets are more important than runs for England. They need to get Australia's magnificent batsmen out as cheaply as possible if they are to stand a chance. Doubt we could make 450 against their bowling attack, whereas they're quite capable of doing it in reverse. So restricting the tourists is a bigger aim than trying to wring out the highest possible total. Sacrifice runs for bowling at the best times and managing the new ball.

First time in the match that the conditions are giving the bowlers some assistance.

Conditions playing their part. The Aussies are bowling at the right time with that cloud cover.

We needed that rain delay. Seem to be between a rock and a hard place waiting to go off and like you say, Aus are having the best of the conditions.

Umpires that normally come off at the sight of a raindrop now seem desperate to get us out there again for half an hour tonight to lose a couple more wickets!

Really don't want to see us back out there tonight. Can only see another wicket or two.

Guess whether it was the correct decision or not likely to be decided by how things go and whether it affects the outcome!

With the game being so finely balanced the decision by Stokes to declare was premature. Those extra 40 or 50 runs could prove crucial in the Aussie run chase.

On the other hand, looking at the forecast for the rest of the test you could say putting a bit of time back into the game was the best way to try and force a result.

The proof will be in the eating. Thankfully, England avoided that last session the way Boland and Cummins had that ball moving around we could’ve been skittled out. Certainly sets it up for an interesting final two days play.

Weather looks between tomorrow, so if we can bat well and score 250-300 (easier said than done of course) then it's going to be an interesting final day with lots of cloud and the possibility of some rain about.

It was an agressive decision, but it gave us two shots at the Australian top order. It might not have worked that evening but it did pay off the next day when we had Australia 2-29, then 3-67 with Labuschagne and Smith both gone. The aim of the declaration was to break into the top order, and it worked. The team created enough chances, despite the flat wicket, to create a 50 - 100 run lead heading into the second innings. They would say it was the 4 big missed opportunities in the field (Broad no ball, Green stumping, and 2x Carey drops) that cost them that lead, not the timing of the declaration.
