https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/jul/17/jamie-driscoll-resigns-labour-b

"Driscoll’s case has drawn backing from other Labour mayors, Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram, who accused the party of being undemocratic, opaque and unfair. Their intervention came after the trade union Unite said Labour’s national executive committee had made a “major error” in blocking Driscoll’s candidacy, which it said was motivated by his support for the renationalisation of utilities."

I think you may find that this was a picture taken on the balcony at the recent Durham Miners Gala. Angela Rayner and the TUC leader were also on the balcony.

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/durham-miners-gala-parade-2

The logical outcome of what you are saying is that Angela Rayner should be expelled from the Labour Party.

Rayner and this guy ... look at this and tell me Starmer and Corbyn haven’t shared a bowl of spaghetti 101 Dalmations style! Get the cranks out!

If Labour can’t be Labour and stand on the sides of workers, the poor and the helpless at this time then there’s no “minor miracle” at all.

It’s entirely predictable that Capitalism’s B team has been given the softest of rides even with the benefit of a total Tory meltdown.

the thing about the uk, and i know this goes counter to your constant message of doom and disaster, is that there isn't enough of the poor and helpless for them to elect a government by themselves. to have any change they need to form an alliance with the 'doing ok' and the 'moderately prosperous' who make up the sizeable majority of the uk population. until you grasp that basic economic reality you won't understand politics.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I really do see your point, but Corbyn had two cracks at it and failed miserably, so if what you call the B team is all that left, so be it. i'd take that over the talentless corrupt and broken Tories.

No he didn’t. Miserable failure was 2010 and 2015.

In 2017 Corbyn was given no chance but still brought loads of votes back to Labour. 2019 was the Brexit election (with Labour’s position torpedoed by the Change UK grifters et al) accompanied by a cynical “lefties are antisemites” narrative. Still no failure compared to 2010 and 2015 but a landslide victory handed to BoJo on a plate by the supposed grown-ups in Labour and the media.

I’d take proper politicians with proper policies for 2023. 5 more years of red or blue Tory is way too damaging for the UK and its people. Not to mention the helplessness and hopelessness that will come when people realise it’s business as usual and f@&k you.

“In 2017 Corbyn was given no chance but still brought loads of votes back to Labour”

He was LESS popular than Teresa May - you must live in a parallel universe if you think that’s a good result.

The concept of doing what is right never troubles you, does it? There are close to 5 million children living in poverty in the UK. If you can’t form a coalition of voters around that basic social injustice (that’s just the sh1ttiest tip of the iceberg) then we’ve got far bigger problems as a society that people need to face up to.

Helping lift up the bottom of society helps everyone. Or do you disagree?

Also political parties can lead on value rather than the lowest common denominator of “what’s in it for me?”.

a teresa may who called the election precisely because she was so far ahead of corbyn in the polls that she, and many tory voters, thought an election unlosable and who then ran such an unbelievably awful campaign that she used up much of her lead. and still she won.

what is right is electing a government that will protect the nhs and education and is committed to public services and putting more resources in, amongst many other things. in terms of funding the public sector a repeat of blair would be hugely beneficial in terms of social justice. it won't happen unless a huge number of doing ok and moderately prosperous people who voted tory in 2019 vote labour now. even you can't deny that's true. so what's your strategy for winning over ex tory voters who aren't living in poverty and aren't 'helpless'? they need to believe you won't wreck what they already have - a not unreasonable basis for voting. just telling them that you're right and they're wrong and that everyone will be better off won't work. telling them you only care about the poor and 'helpless' won't work. bringing in irrelevancies such as palestine and why you hate the us / nato won't work. and the trouble is that in the end even i don't believe that people like you wouldn't wreck what the majority of voters already have.

I’ve met traffic wardens that were more popular than Gordon Brown.

Ed Milliband would have been elected had he chosen porridge for breakfast. And at least he stepped down rather than gift another 5 years of incompetence and hands in the till.

That’s where we disagree. 2019 was a gift to the Tories because far too many people at the top of our politics and political media decided that 2017 was too close for comfort. The Change UK silliness, Remainiac posturing and the weaponisation of antisemitism was bringing out the big guns.

People wonder why Starmer isn’t offering anything vaguely socially democratic. Because that’s simply not on the agenda of these people. Quite the opposite — they are low tax, low spend right-wingers and fairly clear about that.

If anyone is in any doubt, just look at who led the charge on here.

Not sure Corbyn had been suspended by Labour when this photo was taken koonters. 1/10 for trying though.

As for Driscoll though, if he has your backing then he’ll no doubt go the way of the Northern Independence Party. Your last big hope of replacing Labour in the north. How did that turn out for you?

That hasn’t been a problem for those organisations that have been proscribed and people then punished retroactively for their association.

There doesn’t seem to be any procedural or moral case here at all. Like it’s being made up as we go along.

How did it work for the NIP? The problems they were talking about have only gotten worse. Enough is Enough was the same. These mini-campaigns and movements are great for showing how real, underlying issues are consistently and actively ignored by our politics.

Of course, these people are on the right side of history — no wonder you struggle with them. 🙂

With the anti-democratic and authoritarian control, purges of anyone who is outside an extremely narrow and self-serving ideology and the laughable revisionism, I think we can legitimately describe the current Labour leadership approach as Stalinist.

The thing is May had the whole of her party and the right wing press behind, and "doing" Brexit to boot.

Corbyn had clear limitations as a leader, virtually all his MPs against him (including two failed attempts to oust him), and a hostile media, including the Guardian, which had attacked him for two years.

In the end, it was amazing he did as well as he did, particularly given the fact that Scotland had been lost to Labour.

But as I mentioned elsewhere, when campaigning on the streets 2017, it was clear that his message, uncorrupted on TV during an election campaign because of impartiality rules, hit home, particularly with those 50 and under who just haven't benefited from the current system.

My hope when he stood down was for a competent leader with a manifesto perhaps half as radical at Corbyn's . That is why I voted for Starmer, but clearly things have not turned out as I hoped.

Great minds think alike because that was the point I was going to go on to make.

Indeed, were it not for the money, I think those currently in control of the party would really like to sever all links with the trade unions.
