I think Hutchins had taken charge for that game after Jewell scuttled away.
I remember thinking before the game ‘you never know, they’re playing for their careers, let’s hope they give it a good go’. Nope. It was obvious from the moment they shambled out of the tunnel, they weren’t interested and didn’t want to be there. Hutchins was animated throughout (he cared) but he was totally lost.
I’ve no idea how McCarthy managed to get them pointing the right way and out of that mess - with games to spare. I didn’t like the way McCarthy’s teams played much tbh, but it was a real achievement and with what he had available and you are right. He worked a minor miracle.
