Dane Scarlett leaving Tottenham… on 08:15 - Aug 26 by Rozz | Are you really saying that you'd be disappointed if we signed Dane Scarlett for £2.5 million?! Dane Scarlett who: -Was 18 when he joined Pompey in a physical League 1 -Does not count towards a squad place -Is an England U20 International -Represented England at u15, u16, u19 -Scored more than 1 goal a game in the U18s Premier League -Tipped as "going to be phenomenal" for England by Mourinho 2 years ago -Our own manager called "one of the best young strikers in world football" |
On the basis that: - He doesnt suit our formation - By the looks of how Pompey played him last season, he needs to have a strike partner to play with. - He was ineffective at League 1 level. -There are plenty of players who look great at youth level but never recapture that form at senior level. Rhian Brewster for example looked like a superstar at one point and even looked great for half a season at Swansea. - It could arguably limit what we can spend on a proper Hirst type CF or prevents us signing a player of this ilk due to squad numbers. Then yes i would be disappointed by it. If it was a different scenario, such as we had just been promoted to the premier league and we could bring him in as a prospect to hopefully develop then I'd be happy with it. There wouldnt be so much pressure on him to deliver and it could be seen as an investment.

The kid has massive potential and will be playing regularly in the premier league one day. Cannot really see Spurs entertaining offers for a permanent transfer though - or if they do, probably not letting him go for anything less than 10m+. So that then leaves just the possibility of a loan. Do we need another striker? Yes in my opinion as Freddie is not good enough cover for Hirst. Is Dane Scarlett good enough for the championship yet? Evidence would suggest maybe not - could be in the same boat as Hutchinson who for me doesn't look ready for this level yet. But McKenna knows Scarlett as well as anyone so if he believes he is ready now then thats good enough for me.

This is kind of where I am. I'm not convinced he's fully ready to come in and make a big contribution from day 1 so I'd be reluctant to take him on loan and use up a squad space. I can't see Spurs being willing to sell for a fee that would be realistic for us either so I think this might be a non-starter. Think he'd do well somewhere like Barnsley or Bolton as a loan. All their fans rated him the club just had to choose between him and some other player to sell so chose him. He was also about 5/6 years younger when with them so probably wasn’t very good in comparison to what he is now
