Fog Horn

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/signal-of-change-remaining-foghorns-fall-silent-

When I was a kid, we’d listen to the fog horns from the docks signalling in the New Year while my old man ran around the outside of the house doing something with a lump of coal. Bloody idiot; we left him to it, but the fog horns always stuck in my mind. They may have been on the boats rather than land installations, not sure. We were up in IP4 by the back entrance to Copleston school fields/ the Hospital, so the noise carried well.

Thinking about that reminds me that I miss hearing my parents voices as well. TWTD.

My mum used to send me out the back door at exactly 23:59 on New Year's Eve in a black greatcoat with a lump of coal in my pocket. I was told to take my time getting round to the front door and disguise my identity so that the first person who knocked on the door and was let into the house in the New Year was a stranger with a lump of coal in their pocket. Supposed to be lucky but sounds like a good superstition to circulate for serial killers who like to batter people to death with lumps of coal.

That’s the one! All a bit weird, but also warm and homely at the same time. What fun we had!

Absolutely, and it has reminded of how much I miss the sound of screaming as I batter the family to death with a lump of coal...
