Scarlett might be brought in to be the lone striker. He might be an option to switch to a two to give us more flexibility.
He might be competition for Broadhirst or Chaplin and play in a slightly different role.
He might be because McKenna thinks he will score for fun in our side. He might be coming in as a replacement for a player about to be sold for big money. He might be coming in today WITH a mega bucks signing that is the other player for the Hirst role.

Some of the comments on the story are absolute gold. We have one of the most highly rated coaches you will find, who has pursued for some time a player he absolutely raved about and people are questioning him without having any idea what role Kieran sees Scarlett as playing in the overall story of the season.
The last player he felt this way about was George Hirst. Scorer of zero goals at Blackburn, scorer of barely anything at Rotherham. It's a shame that guy didn't prove to be bloody brilliant or people would be able to trust Kieran knowing what we need. |  | | |  |

In peoples defence we have had a few hit and miss signings under McKenna, but that is expected. Burley signed a lot of stinkers as we built toward promotion as well.
People aren't bemoaning the quality of the signing in this case, people are asking why we should be developing a player for Spurs (and Chelsea in the case of Hutchinson) rather than signing someone long term for Towns benefit. This is a reasonable question to ask. |  | | |

What misses have we had?
Ahadme injured his foot after a couple of games after scoring his first goal. Hardly McKenna's fault. Camara was carrying an injury we believed he'd recover from and has struggled since. Hardly McKenna's fault. Edmundson was signed before McKenna took over and has had injury nightmares.
One cost peanuts and the other was a perfectly affordable fee for us.
Who else has failed under McKenna? EVERY single player that has been fit under him this past 18 months has been a success, a huge success or an unbelievable success.
The reason we are 'developing' other teams players is because Hutchison, a player likely not good enough to walk into our XI cost Chelsea something like a reported £5m from Arsenal. Would you want us spending that sort of money on a player who is squad depth and an option when we can just loan them?
Do people really expect us to have youngsters of the ability of those that Champions League clubs have! If we want young players to complete the squad - because you can't have 25 first team regulars, then you're going to take those happy to get a taste of first team action who you feel could push the starters.
What sort of money would we need to spend to get a proven striker? Piroe cost Leeds £8m rising to £12m! Even Simms (with a record similar to Broadhead) cost £5m rising to £8m!
Until we've had a season here and can shift players like Davis for £5m, £10m or £15m, we won't be spending this sort of money, so we'd be stupid to turn down players of that calibre when they can be loaned.
I do wonder if there's a Sunderland fan out there moaning when they signed Diallo that they were improving a Man Utd youngster instead of paying the £37m needed to secure him permanently! [Post edited 31 Aug 2023 13:10]
