Has there ever been a better example of how media can destroy a player by undermining his confidence ? He now looks a pathetic shadow of the player Man U signed a few years ago . I really feel for him .

The circus reached a fever pitch last night because of how weird it is. Man Utd aren't blessed with CBs but he isn't close to starting; he's below Luke Shaw in the pecking order. And his performances at club level predated the feeding frenzy, as much as the transfer fee created its own pressure. I understand him wanting to continue earning obscene wages at Man Utd, but that should have put a pause on his international career.

It isn't England's strongest position but we still have players performing well at good clubs. Dunk has long been an important player for an excellent passing side. Tomori is AC Milan's first choice CB. Guéhi is one of Palace's most important players. Colwill did well for Brighton last season and is now starting for Chelsea. White is a permanent fixture for Arsenal and has begun this season at CB. Smalling plays all the time for Roma. Obviously Stones is a big miss.

It's farcical that club performances have become so inconsequential for Gareth, really.

I agree, it's deplorable the way he is treated. But the general public on social media are just as bad.

I would suggest the general public on social media have led this and the press have played catch-up.

It’s like British media have a bingo card of coordinating scummy behaviour:

Big tournament coming up on the horizon - yup.
Little to no scandal in the England camp to write about - yup
Identified player who could potentially be affected by criticism - yup
Player that morons will unite in disliking - yup
Will divide public opinion - yup
Will give us potential opportunities to go after the manager - yup

All this in our best period for years.

Christ... where did I miss the news that Maguires move to West Ham broke down? I thought he'd made the move. Must have been in an ITFC vacuum the last month.

For me, Maguire is crazy not to have made that move. An absolute great chance to reignite his career elsewhere. He must have made his money already and West Ham will be paying good PL wages. For all the bad press and unfair jibes - Maguire still could have restarted again in a less pressurised environment. And hes still only 30.
Don't think Southgate is doing him any favours. He should be telling him behind the scenes to get regular football and if he can't - he won't be picked. The fact is - if you're playing good enough for your club and you have a couple of dodgy games at international level then that can be overlooked. But if you all you've got is international games to show-case yourself - then you'd better be damn good and error-free.

Maguire has been better than all those players for the majority of the last 5 years, that it has taken Guéhi (and hopefully Colwill) this long for anyone to put some real England pressure on him is why he has continued to play.

Why should Southgate worry more about club form than England form, and England form on the biggest stages?

As someone who watches a lot of Roma, Smalling just isn't close to good enough for this squad, as we saw when he was in it. Southgate has never rated Tomori and he's nowhere near as good as the Twitterati make out.

If Mings was fit then he'd have put some pressure on maguire in that left sided role, but it wasn't that long ago everyone wanted him dropped from the squad.

It's great that we finally have a couple of defenders putting pressure on him, but that just hasn't been the case up until now despite his lack of club game time

The assessment window for international selection is typically shorter than 5 years (thankfully). It's also taken so long for players to come close to displacing him due to Gareth's indifference to club form. Dunk is an obvious example of this. Gareth is of course welcome to do as he chooses, but the crowd, social media and press response to the farce is entirely predictable. It was teetering for the World Cup, but I think the majority of us supported his inclusion. He hadn't been out of the club scene for long and the England back-catalogue was strong. Over the summer, Maguire has chosen the Henderson route without the game-time!

I totally agree on Smalling, but I also don't have any confidence that Maguire would displace him in the Roma setup. I'm confident Maguire would be a backup option at AC Milan.

For the record, I really wanted him to find any club that would allow him to play football again over the summer and to become a justifiable pick again.

But with Stones out, there felt a need for Maguire - I think it would have been unfair to go to Ukraine away and play Dunk and Guéhi as the CB pairing as just so inexperienced in international football and Southgates system so it was the case of who got the not out of those 2 alongside Maguire.

Obviously we would never have known, but had Stones been fit would he have played Guéhi alongside him? Guess we'll find out in the next international break.

I think Southgate reasons his selections pretty well in the pressers, these 2 show him talking about Maguire and Phillips; and the second one re Sterling not coming back into it. GS is fully focussed on the Euro's now, and if things continue as they are it is unlikely Maguire starts but he's a good squad option
