An advantage that we have 10:26 - Sep 27 with 1444 viewsGuthrum

Is our "reserves" team isn't exactly that.

Quite a few of them are regulars in McKenna's 60th-70th minute rotation scheme (Hutchinson, Ladapo, Harness, Ball, Jackson, Williams) and several others have been First Team starters at different times (Evans, Edmundson, Humphreys and others of the previous category).

Baggott is pretty much the only out-and-out "reserve" among all of them and that's as much to do with his youth as anything.

It's an integrated "squad", any combination from which can be used for particular tasks and scenarios as required.

Indeed. They are our 'finishers' for games.

Also really it's been a really clever evolution.

If you look at the team last night the following started early part of last season as first 11 players:

Ball
Edmundson
Harness
Evans
Ladapo
Jackson (less so but grew into important player last season)

They've just moved to the fringes over time but still with lots of engagement /involvement and valuable contributions!

Then you add in Williams/Hutchinson/Taylor who will grow into first 11 this season.

And future quality players: Baggott/Humphreys.

It's a strong and well balanced unit rather than second string per se.

I posted last night about this. I used the term fringe players but you are probably right in your assertion that actually a squad.

A few observations from me based on that tonight. by homer_123 26 Sep 2023 21:50
Evans was spot on in his assessment. The fringe players are on it, they get it and are fully bought in. KM and the team have the 'whole' squad going in the same direction, this is excellent as it genuinely allows KM to rotate or bring players in knowing they will slot in.

Hat trick Harness - that's the Harness we saw early doors, I like this Harness a lot!!!

Hutch - clearly learning still and not the finished article but we haven't had anyone this exciting since Dos Santos - this guy is a cut above and he does not shirk his responsibility, he is not a luxury player.

Ladapo - again, he's stepping up, raising his game, pleased he nabbed a goal tonight and a very tidy finish from him. But don't overlook his hold up play and pace - he's languid but he's no slouch and again, he puts in the hard yards.

Yes – there is not a single person in the squad who looks or (presumably) feels like a loose part. Some achievement.

Indeed I had never heard the term before but Matt Holland said yesterday on TS2 that KMc is a 60/30 manager. Meaning he knows his starting 11 but the 11 that play the last third are equally as important.

If you look at the starting 11 yesterday, Edmondson and Evans have played 50 odd first team games for Ipswich, Jackson must be well over 100, Harness, Hladky and Ladapo 30 odd? Williams, Hutchinson, and Taylor are all regularly in the first team as either starts or subs. Hardly the ressies are they. As you say, Baggott is the only non-regular starter and he looked good last night.

The only regular starter who started last night was, as you know, Hladky.
